What new foods have you tried recently?

I can't remember why it suddenly came into my head (quite probably reading a post on suburban :hmm: ) but the other day I realised that I hadn't tried red cabbage since before I can remember :hmm: - I just recall being young and completely repulsed by the stench of vinegar which would hang in the air for what seemed like DAYS  whenever my mum made one of her enormous batches of red cabbage, apple and sultanas.
The thing is, I didn't like ANY cabbage back then but have loved green in all it's forms for years as an adult, so fuck knows why I've not got round to trying cooked red cabbage again - especially when I really like that whole sweet/sour/pickley type taste, too

Anyway  having now HAD the thought  I've got a red cabbage coming with my shop on Friday  so I'm gonna give it a go (I *think* the kids are away this weekend, too - I had actually worried about passing my own childhood disgust to them :D - although I won't let it stop me if they're not, tbf :p ).

*excited*

I couldn't decide if this should go here or the bargainous food thread, but my local Sainsbury's has Tyrrell's wasabi peanuts down from £2 a pack to 20p  They don't go off till June! But they are *not* nice :( and I have 7 bags of them :(

I just had a limited edition Toffee Treat KitKat. It was vile, almost unbearably toothachingly sweet.

Double bubble today. Firstly used and tasted karela (bitter gourd) for the first time. It was pretty bitter and I put a bit too much chili in, but liked it which is just as well given that I've got a big bag of the stuff in the freezer.

I then tried a Polish raspberry flavored sort of jaffa cake from Lidls. I wouldn't eat a second unless I had really serious case of munchies. Tasted fake as fuck

Yacón - which is in the daisy family so related to Jerusalem artichokes and dahlias.
I never actually got around to tasting fartichokes even though I always had them on my allotment.
These are plain weird - crisp and taste very much like pear when raw and even after baking for ages, never seemed to change in character - it's claimed these can be used like water chestnuts in stir-fries :hmm:

The same colleague also brought in some oca they'd also grown. These are members of the rather invasive oxalis family. Now these were very nice when baked - nutty and sweet - I will probably grow them one day.

Wasabi flavour crispy seaweed thins - if you like the crispy skin off a roast chicken, you'd like these. And if you like savoury things but dislike fake meat, you'd probably like them too.

I sort of sleepwalked into eating heart the other day. :( They didn't have much available off the menu and we wanted some meat; I could see it said something about heart underneath the picture but thought maybe it wasn't. :hmm: It came and it was quite stringy and chewy and crispy, it wasn't bad, but it was not normal, iyswim. I didn't tell Mr Yu as I didn't want to explain why I hadn't said anything when we were ordering.

:D

I'll have 'em!

Recently I have tried llama meat (burger) and turo rudi (Hungarian cottage cheese chocolate bar).

The llama burger was like a coarse beef, but otherwise didn't taste especially exciting.

The turo rudi was lovely. It has a texture of cheesecake in the middle and is sweet but not too sweet. I don't believe there's any actual cheese in it: it just looks like Hungarian cottage cheese:

Mine had strawberry in the middle, too.

I've just eaten the second half of a Rachel's Raspberry Yoghurt

The thing is I don't buy Raspberry because I don't particularly like it. I prefer Gooseberry, Rhubarb and Greek Ginger and I only buy those.

So I don't know how it got it my fridge in the first place and I don't remember eating the first half of the pot.....

I live by myself......

Believe it or not, tortilla wraps .. I've had a few ready-made "sandwiches", but last weekend bought a pack of semi-wholemeal seeded ones for my daily work breakfast.

These are PNB / tofu / salad things that usually go in some rather nice seeded soft wholemeal baps I get from the shop at work - rather expensive at 45p each - and I often fail at making them stay together once cut and overflowing with damp ingredients ..

I haven't mastered the folding yet, but they seem much more up to the job and flatbreads have always agreed better with my insides for some reason. and save me money.

It doesn't solve my wasted home made bread problem though. Even though I've swapped the rather crap Aldi wholemeal bread mixes for Wrights seeded, I still don't fancy it with soup at lunchtime during the week.

It doesn't have to be vinegary either.
You can braise it with apple slowly for hours so the apple kinda dissolves. With nutmeg and cinnamon and a load of butter. Lush.

Wtf?

Did you like it? :hmm: E2a: crunchy or smooth?

Crunchy. I was making chicken satay and so had a taste. It's nice, but I'm not sure I could imagine spreading it on my toast. I'm 99% sure I've never tasted peanut butter on it's own before, though I have had the peanut butter Kit Kat.

You need to try the good stuff. I reckon Essential is the best at the moment - for a long time it was Suma - must try that again.
Bears no relation to what you buy in the supermarket - even "Whole Earth"

Maftoul, or giant Palestinian couscous - it's lovely cooked in stock and mixed with chopped sun dried tomatoes and olives.

Teapigs Sweet Ginger tea. I got it as a free sample with some oolong. It's exactly as the name suggests and probably the nicest herbal-type tea I've ever tried.

I keep meaning to try it again. Not tasted it for about 30 years. I eat a lot of peanuts. And who doesn't like butter.
