What new foods have you tried recently?

Key Lime Pie.

Had been sort of looking forward to trying this for a couple of years or so, in a non-urgent kind of way. M&S pudding. Should have been nice.

Wasn't. :(

I bought a few Marks' steam puddings recently and they were really nice so I thought I'd try out the Heritage ones in my local supermarket. Big mistake. Heritage is the sort of brand that any self-respecting store wouldn't stock because they are beyond tasteless. They're like someone got out a chemistry set, cooked up a batch and then sent them off to the shops.

The sponge is, well, it defies description really. I suppose the closest I can come to it is chewing on a piece of rubber foam. And there's a liquid in the bottom of them that is whatever didn't solidify from the chemicals they created it with. It has a really acrid, chemically taste to it. No food taste whatsoever.

On the plus side, they'll keep for years.

I feel your pain. Nothing's so disappointing as a sinful, fattening, not good for you but pleasurable treat ... which turns out not to have been worth the bother. I don't really mind being disappointed by healthy or "virtuous" foods but an inadequate pudding is just cruel.

Pine nuts though ones that I had to de shell (pine nuts are not new ) pain in the ass, not for me

Key Lime Pie is indeed delicious. It's a bit like a cheesecake. Well, the one I had was. Wasn't in Florida, though. Yorkshire :D

I've just eaten a twinkie on the recommendation of Orang Utan. He was wrong and Miss Caphat was right. They ain't all that :(

Please try the M&S one and report back, so I've got something to compare it to. :)

I thought this would be the case, tbf. You can tell when Orang Utan goes so far to try to assert something, the opposite is almost certain to be the actual truth of the matter.

Mmmm, I go a bit funny around callaloo - it's so delicious I just can't get enough of it in my mouth at once. I've never seen it fresh in this country (tinned is good though) - I wonder if you can grow it??

On some gardening programme a few weeks ago they visited a Jamaican chap who's been growing callaloo and anything else Jamaican which doesn't demand tropical sunshine for the last 25 years in a greenhouse on his allotment made out of old window frames. Finding the seeds might be more tricky though.

Oh, easy to find and they look a hundred times better in flower than I thought they would too. Want.

It's not a new food but I've started liking pork pies recently. I used to really hate them when I was a kid.

Ugh, really not a fan of them :( especially when hot! Utterly vile. A proper one from Melton Mowbray is just about acceptable but not the one's you buy in supermarkets et al. Sad way for a pig to go...

I love a decent pork pie. Had one of them ones with an egg in the middle over the weekend.

Never had a hot one though.

Me and eggs have grown on each other over the years, but poached ones I never really tried. My first and last attempts, which would have been 15 years back, were a sprawl of eggwhite marbled through the pot of water. I was given egg poachers that took longer to clean than cook with. I chucked them and gave the idea up. How could have they been better than a fried egg anyway.

So I've been trying again, but with a touch of vinegar and swirling the pot into a vortex just before popping the egg in and they're coming out lovely. On toast with a tomato or avocado with dressing. My current breakfast of choice.

How many eggs a week are you recommended to eat in a week before you start dying of eggy related heart attacks ?
