Veganism, new and old Vegans, info, support and recipes

They have it in Sainsbury's too.

Maybe it's regional or a newish addition. Hopefully it's the latter as I was searching for some a while ago as the Asian supermarket I usually use didn't have any in. I asked in asda, sainsburys and Morrisons and was met with blank looks. Saying that, what with the increase in demand and new ranges, my local Morisons have recently stopped selling sosmix

Aldi have <...>
They also have tonnes of flour in, spelt, rye (gentlegreen)
Mine has cotswold flour for 19p.
Mine hasn't so far been selling off Cotswold flour cheap even though they once again have an excess of the odd stuff - French Patisserie and a maize blend...
I loved the spelt while it lasted and have been buying all the malty "Cotswold Crunch" I can spot.

I tried the rye, but it made a stodgy cakey kind of bread in my machine (I added caraway seed).

I'm making tsebhi birsen for dinner tonight (I have not made injera :D ), on sojourner's recommendation. It's really good (cheers soj!) and possibly a twist on your usual dal. Recipe here, about halfway down. There are some other interesting looking vegan recipes on that page too :)

Noticed these in Sainsbury's yesterday. Vitamin D and B12 enriched mushrooms! Apparently a third of a pack has your RDA of B12 and 60% of your RDA of vit D. This is an exciting development and early signs of what I hope is an evolving new plant-based food paradigm:

I bought some fishless filets today in Sainsbury’s in the freezer section. I have been veggie almost 30 years & never relied on or sought meat/fish replacement but with all the choice there is now so easily available I’m happy to give it a whirl. Also bought vegan Magnum ice creams.

Had a laugh at the vegan salmon though!

That's just brilliant.

Lovely innit polly ? I'm gonna be making it again soon as I have more berbere mix, and I believe some is on its way already thanks to the kindness and generosity of Biddlybee

Had a Fry's vegan sausage roll (currently on offer for 80p in Sainsbury's) .
Not dissimilar to greggs, although next time I will brush it with soy milk and heat.

So I got to try this and it's pretty good. Mild and a bit like Gouda. Stick it in a salad sandwich and it tastes pretty damn good.

I've tried the grated version and it's pretty good. Slightly better than Asda's own version (but 50p more)
I bought some of this the other week to try and it was it was reduced (from £2.80 - £2.30 irrc).

I griddled it and served it as a 'haloumi' burger, with some lemon dressed salad and a chilli ketchup. It went down really well so I bought some more today... It's now gone down to £1.80! Not sure whether it's because Veganuary has finished so they have stopped cashing in, or that it is popular enough to reduce the price :hmm:
I served 10 people with it today and got 9 raving reviews back (all meat-eaters) The only person who wasn't that impressed with it (although loved the salad) has been vegan for 30 odd years and said it was a bit too cheesey for her :)

I'll definitely give that a go next!

I might reconsider this brand in that case. Their cream cheese is great but the cheese slices were like tasteless plastic. Will look out for it.

I made the Bosh scambled tofu today. I've got to say, this is a game changer. For years I've been trying with both silken and firm tofu and never thinking the texture of either was quite right. Combining the two is a touch of genius:

I got the Bosh book from a friend for Christmas. My tofu experiments have almost all been failures so far but this looks worth a go.
