Veganism, new and old Vegans, info, support and recipes

I tried Iceland's new vegan sausages. Not as good as the no bull burgers. Bit soggy fried so might try in oven next time.

Are they gluten free by any chance?

I'd recommend the 'shroomdogs' sausages from Sainsbury which are both vegan and gluten free. And made from pea protein rather than soya. Although I'm not at all anti-soya, think it's good that there is an increasing range of products that aren't based on soya, variety is good for the diet.

The only allergy advice is soya. They contain rice flour.
I've got some shroom dogs. The first time I cooked them I had to check the packet because the smell was very sausage like probably due to the herbs they use (Cumberland, Lincolnshire)? Put me off slightly. They would be excellent for someone wanting to cut down their meat intake.

HOORAY! I am falling in love with Iceland. It is a bit of an annoying trek to my nearest one but I will have to get it together at the weekend.

Cooked my mum’s tarka dhaal recipe this week, which I really enjoy:

Ingredients:
1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil of choice
One large white onion, diced
2 cloves of garlic, minced or finely chopped
Tomato purée
1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
1 tablespoon of curry powder
2 teaspoons of tumeric
1 teaspoon of ground corrianda
1 teaspoon of ginger
2 teaspoons of mango chutney
1 cup of dried red lentils
400 g of fresh tomatoes diced or a 400 g tin of chopped tomatoes
Whole pack of spinach
1 Tablespoon of creamed coconut
Rice and fresh corrianda to serve

Instructions:
1. Heat the oil in the pan then add the cumin seeds and cook briefly until fragrant. Add the onion and garlic and cook until soft.
2. Add all the spices and then the mango chutney and tomato purée and stir together to form a curry paste.
3. Add the tomatoes and mix. If you are using fresh tomatoes, cook until soft they start to break apart and their juices mix with the spices.
4.add the lentils and about half the water recommended on the pack (add more if needed).
5. Cook on a medium heat until the lentils are fully cooked.
6. Mix in the creamed coconut and spinach until the spinach is wilted.
7. Serve on rice with chopped fresh corrianda.

Tried the Iceland ‘no chick burgers’ for dinner last evening. Had them in a bun with mayonnaise, ketchup and sriracha and served with chips. Baked them in the oven and finished them on the griddle pan to get them crispy and charred on the outside. Two thumbs up from me.:thumbs:

For a healthy, cheap, filling snack for on the go I’d recommend ‘Hike’ bars from Aldi. You can find them at the till area for 49p each. They have over 10g of protein per bar and under a gram of fat. They are oil and refined sugar free and are made up mainly of oats, dried fruit and soya protein. Like all protein bars they’re pretty dry and not super tasty. But for nutrients, convenience and price you get good bang for your buck.

So apparently hummus is considered a ‘liquid’ by airport security. A devasting blow for travelling vegans everywhere. We are limited to 100 ml or less. :(

Anyone else tried these vegan Magnums?

They had them in my local Tescos, really good I thought. More expensive but they taste excatly as I remember dairy Magnums.

Just stopped at a ‘Hungry Horse’ pub whilst cycling. They’ve got some vegan options: vegan ‘fish’ & chips with mushy peas, vegan ‘fish’ fillet sizzler grill, falafel burger, chickpea and sweet potato curry, two vegan salad bowls and a Bakewell tart with vanilla ice cream.

Anyone tried these, got them from Sainsbury's tonight. Only tried the spread from naturli.
Having them tomorrow so will report back.

I had this again for dinner tonight and have reassessed. I like it. Not quite as much as no bull but it’s still very tasty. I’d put it up there with the Linda Mcartney quarter pounder. Your verdict?

They were a good texture, a bit blander than no bull and maybe even L macs. If I had them again I think I would do them with with a homemade onion gravy and potatoes/veg.
Having said that, my appetite has been terrible the past few weeks and I may as well be chewing on the corner of my coffee table.
;).
What did you have yours with?

In a seeded wholemeal bun with lettuce, tomato, mayo and ketchup and some homemade potato wedges on the side.
