Veganism, new and old Vegans, info, support and recipes

And right back on topic, here's a pizza I'd like to try:

Vegan Pizza Crowned 'National Pizza Of The Year' At Major Awards

It was a rhetorical question and, again, please take note of the thread title while being free to continue venting at will on the other thread. End of discussion.

Ah, I think the confusion was possibly caused by the fact thatusually rhetorical questions are phrased in such a way as to provoke some degree of thought.

But in the spirit of general fraternity, that pizza does look good.

Have you tried it?

The Iceland ones are still the best I've tried, and among the cheapest.
Just looking for a vegan cheese that completes the 'vegan cheeseburger' experience.

It's available as of tomorrow apparently. I agree 'no bull' is the best I've tried so far too. We've still got a way to go with vegan cheese but violife sliced cheese would work pretty well for a cheese burger I recon.

Violife is definitely the frontrunner among Urbanite recommendations- I shall give it a go.

I brought some of the Iceland ones to a couple of barbecues during the summer - was surprised about the reluctance of many carnies, veggies and vegans (and one Halal) to give them a go.

I stocked up in Iceland a couple of weeks ago and tried everything in their new range which is both vegan and gluten free. Sadly, the interesting new products - Asian burger, tofu burger, the chicken style stuff - all contain wheat. The others are really a reformulation of the original No Bull Burgers and not all of them work that well.

Jalapeno burgers - lovely, as basically just the original burgers with a bit of a kick
Meat balls - enjoyed these, worked well in a pasta dish. Similar taste to the burgers but different texture.
Sausages - these are just a bit crap really. They're a bit on the small side and tricky to cook. Taste just like the burgers but in sausage form.
Mince - I made a perfectly nice chilli with this but I wouldn't buy it again because it's not any nicer than alternatives and is a bit of a faff to use. It comes in a massive frozen block and you have to defrost it first (hate that). Then you're supposed to fry it before the rest of the cooking but it was difficult to tell if this really did anything, it didn't brown as such. And because there is so much of it you've got to make an enormous dish. Normally when I use mince type products it's to bulk something out rather than being the main ingredient. Still, it tasted nice, but be better in a packet half the size.

Chocolate Ice Lollies (field tested on kids and a massive hit every time)

Blend a handful of cashew nuts, a couple of sliced bananas, half a can of coconut milk and a good big spoon of cocoa till you've got a nice smooth paste.

Pour it into ice lolly moulds and freeze it for a few hours.

That's it.

They taste as good as if not better than any chocolate ice cream you can buy and are actually healthy.

It's a shame you couldn't try the chicken strips, I thought they were really good (saying this for the info of others, not to taunt you!). They'd be great in fajitas I recon, or a korma.

They're good, aren't they? We've had the chicken strips in shwarma-style wraps & in a khichadi-style pot curry, & they work brilliantly. The range is terrific - the jalapeno burgers, strips & meatballs have become staples, & my four year old loves the paella ('Spanish fried rice'). Really good seeing it in Iceland, freed from the rare specialist shops. Along with the Vivera gear in Tesco, it's becoming so much more accessible - & easier getting the boy to join in (unwittingly).

Ooo they sound lovely. They'd be nice with pistachios as well.

Couldn't agree more. Won't be buying them again.
I bought the oumph kebab spiced strips when it was on offer in tescos. Not tried it yet. They have launched a pizza as well.
Oumph! |

I really like Oumph! Must get to Tesco again... trouble is with all these new products being tied to certain stores is that you really have to vary your shopping habits to get hold of them. A huge pity that the Beyond Burger launch at Tesco never happened - apparently delayed indefinitely because the US company can't keep up with ever escalating demand, building new factories etc.

I'm going to find it very hard to stay as pure plant-based as I want living in Brittany as an OAP ...
I was watching this earlier - I've yet to master vegan crepes - and here's another cultural staple ...

But I've found a place with recipes - and I accidentally bought a bag of white flour earlier ...

Vegan supermarket news

* Over 60 vegan meals launched in M&S this week. I had a look today in my local and the range was amazing, M&S have gone from one of the least vegan-friendly supermarkets to arguably the most friendly.

* 25 more vegan meals available in Sainsbury's

* Iceland vegan range is back and fully stocked, and two 'no cheese' pizzas have been added.

I've yet to master vegan crepes

I replaced my traditional egg/milk pancakes with vegan crepes in my cafe a few months ago and they have gone down really well. No one has complained that they aren't as good as the ones I used to make (which got nothing but good reviews). I've had several people tell me they are better in fact. They aren't exactly the same as egg based ones, but close enough and dead easy. Just self-raising flour, a bit of baking powder, soya milk, veg oil and a bit of salt. When I was first told the recipe I was very dubious, but after a bit of tweaking to get the quantities right I'm not going back. I'm going to experiment a bit with different plant based milks and maybe encorporate Naturili butter when I can find it in blocks... I've tasted the spreadable one and it is extremely close to butter (but no good in cooking). The block acts the same apparently, but it has always sold out when I try and get some... what is it with some, mostly new I think, vegans clearing the shelves as soon as something appears? I keep seeing people posting on a vegan facebook group of their 'haul' of dozens of pizzas, burgers, ready meals etc. No wonder there's rarely any stuff left on the shelves :D

Aldi too now:

Aldi Launches Juicy Vegan Quarter Pounders and Over 10 New Vegan Ready Meals and Snacks

The supermarkets need to offer better vegan food to cook from scratch with. I'm not interested in vegan burgers or ready meals, but i am interested in cooking with things like seitan, smoked tofu, jackfruit etc, but have not had much luck finding these as a raw product.
