Asda launches two brand new vegan ranges containing over 112 products
The OMV! range will offer indulgent meat-free meals and delicious snacks, whilst the Plant Based range provides healthy, nutritionist-approved meat alternatives
86 products available both in-store and online from January, with the full range becoming available throughout the year

Whether you’re a seasoned vegan or simply looking to cut down meat consumption this January, Asda’s new OMV! and Plant Based ranges have you covered, with over 112 high-quality, unapologetically indulgent, and flavoursome products.

The OMV! range contains decadent, tasty treats sure to tantalise your tastebuds, whilst the Plant Based range offers nutritionally balanced meat-free meals that don’t compromise on flavour.

New for January 2023, Asda’s OMV! Hot & Spicy No Chicken Burgers (£2.25) are a must-try. Prepared with a succulent pea and wheat protein blend and encased in a zingy hot and spicy crumb, they’re perfect for pairing with the delightfully soft OMV! Brioche Burger Buns (£1.15), for an easy Friday night dinner with family or friends.

For those missing a hearty fry-up on those cold, January mornings, the Plant Based by Asda Bacon style rashers (£2) are a brilliant choice. Made with wheat protein, and nutritionist-approved, the 100% vegan rashers can be indulged on in between slices of soft farmhouse bread, or as an accompaniment to the juicy and flavour filled OMV! No Pork Caramelised Red Onion Sausages (£2).

A vegan take on a classic dish, the OMV! Macaroni Cheese (£2.85), is perfect for a quick and comforting weekday meal. Combining traditional macaroni pasta with an oozing coconut oil-based cheese alternative, the cheesy favourite is topped off with a flavour filled paprika and parsley crumb.

For those eating lunch on the move, Asda’s new ranges also include on the go options, such as the Plant Based by Asda Chick*n Caesar Wrap (£2.75) – a bar-marked tortilla wrap complete with flame-grilled soya protein pieces, vegan Caesar style mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, gherkins and alternative to Italian style hard cheese, and the OMV! No Prawn Sandwich (£2.75), an Oatmeal bread sandwich with a vegan prawn alternative marinated in a vegan Marie Rose sauce.

Perfect with a coffee or after a meal, the OMV! range includes a number of decedent sweet treats such as the indulgent OMV! Choc Brownies (£2), complete with a sprinkling of chocolate chips, and the OMV! Salted Fudge Chocolate Bar (£2.50), a rice-based caramel milk chocolate, topped with vegan salted caramel fudge and crunchy honeycomb pieces.

The full range will be available to buy in-store throughout 2023, with select products also available to buy online from the 4th of January. Throughout January, customers who spend £5 on vegan own-brand products (OMV! and Plant Based by Asda) can also earn £1 back in their cash pot in the Asda Rewards app.

Heinz baked beans and vegan sausages in Sainsbury's £2
Plus vegan cream of tomato soup Heinz £1.70
Tried the beans and sausages , just like the veggie ones.
Rare treat.

Looking forward to trying the tomato soup! Of course I can't get in my online order in January because all the food's been snaffled by Veganuary folks. :rolleyes:

Sorry

If it's any consolation, there is a shit load more vegan stuff about right now, I've been really impressed with the variety in January (though I will admit it sells out quicker.) And I ate out on Saturday and they were all over the vegan stuff. But yeah, I get the faddiness angle. We're like Xmas drinkers that suddenly appear in pubs in December (I do that, too.)

OH enjoyed this soya based vegan shawarma/doner "meat" from Morrisons recently, they sometimes have it on special offer but usual price is £2.59, however that does an easy 2 portions in pittas with salad and a side dish, so not a bad price for 2.
He loved it, it's got good reviews on Morrisons website too.

This is some decent vegan stuff that I like, not always reasonably priced but they are on special offer at my local Morrisons sometimes.

Yeah I've tried that and can confirm that its very nice.

Had these with my din dins lastnight and they were very nice

I tried them for the first time a week or so back. I was eating one of them raw till I read the packet 😁. Not a bad sub in a pasta sauce and stuff - I sliced mine roughly before pan-frying then adding to a sauce I'd made. Cooked it out a little longer and was quite happy with the texture.

and joy! it's also gluten free which means I can eat it. It's such hell being gluten free and mainly plant-based. I just stare at so many things with envy - such as the chicken breasts above. Though a large amount of Meatless Farms / THIS ranges are gluten free. But I go to the freezers in Sainsbury and there's about 1 in 10 items that don't contain wheat.

Tell me about it, nightmare!

Might have already been asked, but does anyone know what the fuck happened to tivali frozen hot dog sausages? I haven’t seen them for over a year, used to be on my list of stuff to get on occasional Sainsbury’s visits (main shop usually in Aldi). But they’ve just vanished, from Holland & Barrett too. At one time Sainsbury’s did their own version but stopped when they started selling the more expensive and inferior quorn ones in the fridge. They were fucking great, 1 min in the microwave for a quick butty.

(and yes, I know they’re dodgy because Israel, but no similar alternatives)

Other gen for those interested:

  • the Aldi plant-based garlic and herb spread (fake Philadelphia) is pretty decent;
  • Aldi has their own-brand vegan pizzas again, fake bacon ones are good but a bit pricey, and usually only the jackfruit ones left;
  • some people have been slagging off cauldron food sausages to switching to a vegan recipe which isn’t as nice, but I had some of the Cumberland ones this week and they seemed fine;
  • lidl are selling off some of their ‘veganuary’ stock, e.g. vegan Magnums were £2.39 a box today which is pretty cheap. Ideally pick a Lidl in a non-hipster area for the best chance of having stock (I went to the Lawrence Weston one)

They're at Waitrose and Ocado at 4 quid a pop. Or jumbo ones for a fiver.

Last night - at the suggestion of my daughter - we grated tofu and then baked it in the oven with sesame oil, soy sauce and paprika. Caramelised some onions with tomato puree, bit more paprika etc and then mixed these with the tofu when cooked.

Then bunged in tacos with guacamole and salad.

I've never grated tofu before. Woah - it was next level 😁... it's going on my list for sure...

My favourite tofu thing is crazily simple. Start with really firm tofu (tofoo brand is ideal, doesn't need pressing - cauldron definitely does). Slice it up - about half a cm - 1 cm thick. Put slices in a plastic bag and chuck in salt, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, a couple of tablespoons of cornflour or tapioca starch. Toss it in the bag so the slices are all coated. Fry in tbsp oil for about five mins each side. Serve with rice /:stir fried veg. Or just have on toast or in a bagel etc with your preferred condiments. Lots of room for experimentation with flavours - I have some bacon flavoured nutritional yeast which works really well.

That sounds like a healthier version of something I make sometimes, except I deep fry it. :D

I just fry both sides of chunks in a frying pan
Did a stir fry with "this isn't chicken" chunks tonight, chopped the chunks in half and did them in a pan with some oil not loads

Used to have a mini fryer but cleaning that was a faff

Over the last few weeks I've invented a new method of making the most incredibly gorgeous vegan hot chocolate / mochas.

You need a blender, ideally one of those smoothie type ones.

Basic recipe: put in blender: two heaped teaspoons of cocoa powder, one teaspoon (or more) of sugar / agave / sweetener, about 8-10 cashew nuts. Add a mug full of boiling water. Leave to soak for about a minute or so then blend on high speed for 30 seconds / as long as needed depending on how good your blender is. You get the most delicious creamy foamy hot chocolate. I guess you could add milk too but the cashews work fine by themselves.

Variations: extra elements for different flavours, eg a shot of espresso for a mocha / 1 tsp vanilla extract / some dessicated coconut / cranberries or other dried berries / ginger and cinnamon / mint / dried mango and coconut for an amazing tropical hot chocolate etc etc etc

If your blender is shit you might want to presoak the cashews for 10-20 mins.

The danger of course is having cashews in the house ...

Mind you I get into enough trouble with tahini... as it happens though I avoided the Indian gram flour confections when I bought 5.4 kilos of it on Tuesday, last night I found myself improvising halva-like things with cocoa powder and raspberry cordial :(
Not to mention the kilo of Deglet Nour dates ...

As it happens while I was there I spied some broken cashews, but thought better of it ...

Yes cashews are dangerous things. I have worked out that 8-10 of them in a hot chocolate is about 100 calories, which isn't too bad as long as it's just the odd one and you can keep the rest hidden away. I'm trying to lose a couple of kg at the moment so am recording it all obsessively. Though last night I was in a bad mood and did scoff about 30 of the bloody things.

In the main I'm strictly cocoa plus hot water - as with coffee and tea - though I use so much cocoa powder it sometimes might as well be solid chocolate... adding chia seeds is also something I have done...

I feel really lucky here, I eat almost all home cooked and as I work from home am in a position to buy small amounts of whatever veg I fancy daily. Bloke comes round selling his freshly made firm block tofu and the 'skin' you can make shredded from. About the only processed thing I get is a veggie mince a vegan bakery in one of the villages uses and lets you buy packs of, and even that they make themselves rather than a big corp.
I probably don't do much by way of variety as it's never bothered me but do occasionally knock up curries and middle eastern stuff.
