Veganism, new and old Vegans, info, support and recipes

My local Sainsburies didn't have the new mince and burgers in stock but they did have a bunch of new vegan options. One was this, a Goodfella's falafel pizza:

I've got to be honest i was very sceptical about it - thought it would be too dry - but it was actually really tasty.

Falafel is an interesting choice for a pizza topping.
Was it not a bit bland (got a feeling I'd be blasting it with hot chilli sauce)?

I haven't put the No Bull burgers on a bbq yet, but last time I was at a bbq I took along Vivera, - fake steak found in Tesco. More expensive than No Bull at £3 for two and a bit on the small side but they worked really well, they held their shape and didn't stick, even the hardened meat eaters present admitted they were a decent substitute.
I have some currently sitting in my fridge. Do they taste meaty? I also have the fishless goujons if anyone has tried them.

I was pleasantly surprised. It had a hummus drizzle on it to keep it moist and a load of roast vegetables. I know on paper it sounds rubbish but it was far closer to eating a standard pizza than I had anticipated.

Had this too, and really quite enjoyed it. Always scope to add your own non-cheese if you so wish.

i am consudering going back to vegan funily enough - not for shouty grandstanding and superiority, but to curb the collateral of a wasted and destructive lifestyle. i was for a year a couple of decades ago and it was fucking hard work as i was more of a wanker than i am now . will be crusing this thread for reciepies and stuff.

Vegan Cruising. I like it.

I've had the No Bull's a couple of times now and I like them. I think they taste meaty, however it's been a good thirty years since I had a meat burger so maybe I've forgotten. Hopefully if they become more popular the economies of scale should bring the price down a bit although at £1 per patty I guess I shouldn't really complain too much.

Ive had the No Bull ones several times. I like the texture of them. It's this stuff in my fridge I haven't yet tried. £3 for two smallish vegan steaks. Hoping they don't taste meaty.

Ah, ok, my bad. I haven't tried them, seem a bit pricey to me.
You're hoping they don't taste meaty? Isn't that the point of these alternatives, to taste as near as damn it to the "normal" burgers?

Not for me it's not. I find the smell of meat cooking unpleasant, so why would I want it to taste of meat? Maybe if you're veggie/vegan for health conscious reasons you would want it to taste as near as the real thing, but not if you're a conscience veggie.
Its about texture for me and that's why I use soya chunks a lot.

Fair enough, whatever floats your boat, although I'm still a bit confused.

You're a "conscience veggie" who finds the smell of meat cooking unpleasant, but you're ok with it having the texture of the real thing? I'm not suggesting that there's anything right or wrong with that.

The majority of folk who are now vegan were meat eaters before they became vegan. Most of those folk who enjoyed the taste of things like burgers and sausages and chicken nuggets before they went vegan didn't suddenly stop enjoying that taste experience. So having substitutes available that has the familiar taste but without the ethical concerns is imo a good thing. The smell that makes me want to heave is that smell you get in a butchers or fishmongers, which I find absolutely disgusting.

I'll have to try the veggie steak out for myself sometime to see if I like it. Even when I was a meat eater I was never really into big slabs of steak anyway so I may or may not enjoy the Tesco one. (I'm not enjoying the sound of the price tbh).

According to the Guardian article, it's the first week in August, I presume it will be in most of the major branches, I don't know how Tesco's roll these things out.

, but you're ok with it having the texture of the real thing?
I never said I want the texture exactly like meat. I said it's about texture,as in I prefer my veg Al dente as well.
Where do you stand on the flavour thing? Or should I say 'what floats ya boat'?
Anyhow, £3 ain't bad £1.50 per meal plus a few new pots, veg etc.

Ok, cool. The thing is though, veggie burgers are called "burgers" for a reason, it's because they're mimicking the real thing. People who enjoy the taste but not the ethics of the "real thing" can eat them relatively guilt free.

lol, well in a way it will be a "whatever floats my boat" in the sense that taste is always going to be subjective. Most of the veggie burgers I've had have tasted ok to me and some not. I haven't eaten "the real thing" for over 30 years so it's hard for me to compare any of the mock meats to what I ate back then as a meateater. As long as it tastes ok to me and it's and it's reasonably priced then I'll give it a go.

Luckily nowadays there is a hell of a lot more choice available now compared to 30 years ago when all that was available was Tivall Burgers and sausages imported from Israel and only sold in small wholefood shops with barely anything in the supermarkets. So chances are that someone looking for meatless burgers and sausages are more likely to find one that that tastes ok to them.

Yeah I suppose I'm being a bit fussy. It's just that I thought that £2 for the No Bull's was a bit expensive and this one is another quid on top. I've got used to Linda McCartney prices. Anyway I will probably try them one day, and if I like it I may spoil myself once in a while.

I had the Aldi spicy beanburgers for lunch. Nothing like meat of course, but they taste pretty good and don't cost that much. I'd much rather eat them over cheap beef burgers.

Had a fair bit of my home made fermented red cabbage on the side so it didn't look quite so beige.

Save your £3 Paolo, had it tonight. Enjoyed the tender stem broccoli and green beans more. Might do the remaining one in a bun with a shed load of fried onions.

So what was your verdict on the taste and texture? Sounds like you thought it was a bit meh. The No Bulls are alright imo. I'll give the Beyond Burgers a try once they are available if they are reasonably priced. It's great to see an increasing amount of choice. Things are looking up.

Does that have some sort of vegan cheese on it? Or is it basically a 'deconstructed' falafel on a pizza base rather than in a pitta?

Bland as bland can be. Decent texture. Not a patch on the No Bull burgers.
