Veganism, new and old Vegans, info, support and recipes

View attachment 164725 Vegan butter that actually tastes good. Dunno if this has already been posted. My son’s been vegan for years so I always aim to have bits and bobs in that he can eat if he turns up.
Found this in sainsbs the other day and it really is good. Easily as nice as buttery style margarines and, on toasted hot cross bun, indistinguishable from butter.
(Not quite the same spread cold onto fresh bread, but still perfectly palatable.) Huge hit here.

Yes, it's really miles apart from the rest - and palm oil-free too! It is also available in block form, which I haven't tried.

I switched to that a while ago. It really is tasty stuff.

The idea that health reasons are behind this makes me a little sus though.
Will be taking a look at the ingredients list with interest...

Where's it say health reasons? I can't see any reasons in that report... But I assume they do have... Reasons... :hmm:

Thought the same. Wonder if they are going down the coconut oil route like Naturli, or the ingredient list is going to look like a science experiment?.

It’s very strongly implied in their Metro link a bit further down where it quotes some of their marketing.

Then again, if it is mostly about removing the small amount if buttermilk they were using previously then I don’t care if it tastes fine.

It's pretty obvious: veganism is growing hugely and if you can make the stuff taste the same without the mucky stuff from cows' nipples, then it's got to be a winner!

That's my reading too, hence me saying it's massive. Could it be that minor and non-essential use of animal ingredients becomes obselete, presumably at least in part to market forces?

As I'm sure you do, I read ingredients lists incessantly, not because I have a restrictive diet, but because I have a really wide diet and always I like to try new stuffs. But I've noticed on so many products, way down the list it'll say Milk Powder or Egg... And I think, proportionately that is so little milk, or egg or cheese or whatever,, even in the weirdest of products like crumpets and tomato pasta sauce. And I think why don't they just cut that out and make it vegan so I can buy it. Here, take my money!!

I hope its a new thing, it should have a Guardian article about it. Why bother with small inconsequential animal bits n juices, if you can delete that and open up to a wider market? And the meat eaters won't care, they won't even notice! Many of them you could feed them stewed carpet to, they wouldn't balk.

One thing I've wondered though is - are we all going back to hydrogenated fats then? Because they were the big health problem a few years ago and everyone stopped eating marge and went back to butter.

Have you guys considered pushing for a vegan forum on the boards? It would be a really useful way of increasing traffic to the boards, given how trendy it is now, and it would give you all a chance to discuss veganism and it's growing cultural trends in a more focussed area of the boards.

It's bean a while since we had a new forum

There's lots of good reasons to start a new forum, but something being 'trendy' is not one of them!

Yeah trendy's probably not the right word. But lifestyle shifts and all that. A vegan forum would in essence reflect the changes in societal eating habits, promote it as a lifestyle choice with ethical convictions behind it and might actually bring a few more chatterers to the chitter here ;)
