Ukraine

oh yeah, he's not daft enough to push anyone into a corner that meant replying with force was their only real option - i rather doubt he wants western Ukraine anyway, its full of people who don't like him and it would give others a stick to beat him with.

theres fuck all in it except completely skint Ukranians who owe billions and hate Russians. All the good stuff ,the Russian industries and the Russian ethnics and pro Russian Ukranians are in the east .

A spokesman for the Ukrainian border service has said that said eight Russian transport planes landed in Crimea Peninsula in southern Ukraine with unknown cargo.
Serhiy Astakhov told The Associated Press that the Il-76 planes arrived unexpectedly and were given permission to land, one after the other, at Gvardeiskoye air base, north of the regional capital, Simferopol (below).
Astakhov said the people in the planes refused to identify themselves and waved off customs officials, saying they didn’t require their services.

That's interesting. I posted it here earlier, but you are aware that John McCain is the director of the International Republican Institute, notorious for government meddling. Created by Raegon in the 80's to do what "democratization" work the CIA use to do previously http://rightweb.irc-online.org/profile/International_Republican_Institute. Anyway I can't find the article now and the one that I think it was seems to have mysteriously been removed, but the IRI did a $3 million deal with Ukraine's foreign office to fund political parties a few days before the violence broke out. Nonetheless, Michael Drakmon the head of Ukraine's IRI has a close relation with Valentyn Nalyvaichenko the newly appointed head of security http://www.odnako.org/blogs/vneshne...avitel-ssha-vizivaet-eks-glavu-sbu-na-besedu/.

there was an interview with McCain on Ch4 News earlier, he sounded just like a cold war warrior(though he denied there is a new cold war) John Snow gave him an incredibly easy ride, what is going on?

whatever it is it looks like it could feature John McCain solemnly announcing we are all Ukranians now

Just before Barak Obama got rid of her, Hillary Clinton made an amazingly candid admission about the US's real goals in Eastern Europe. Here is what she said:

"There is a move to re-Sovietise the region. It’s not going to be called that. It’s going to be called a customs union, it will be called Eurasian Union and all of that. But let's make no mistake about it. We know what the goal is and we are trying to figure out effective ways to slow down or prevent it."

Simple, direct and clear. Even the use of the expression "re-Sovietise" shows that Hillary and, frankly, most of the Western elites are still completely stuck in a Cold War paradigm in which every Russian move is necessarily an evil one and the West and Russia play a zero-sum game. In the logic of these people, any loss for Russia is by definition a good and highly desirable outcome for the West.

What better way for the West is there to "slow down or prevent" any integration of Russia and the Ukraine than to offer the Ukrainian oligarchy an association deal with the EU which would cost the EU nothing and which would inevitably trigger a trade war between Russia and the Ukraine?

Report on how from last Saturday some investigative journos saved documents at ex-President's estate rather than immediately filing stories, whilst others ignored them & scooped them. The philanthropic journos have now set up a Yanuk Leaks site:

http://www.yanukovychleaks.org/ in Ukrainian, Russian, & English; to be honest, the site isn't that enlightening at the mo - . . . but Roma & a day . . .

Like many things in life - ask any historian - what's here are usually not pics but financial records, the sort of thing that pleases the sensibility of someone like an actuary. But there's more to life than partying, right?

theres that indeed, but in this instance theres also the issue of a certain Ukraninian oligarch stuffing absolutely millions in the Clintons coffers for years ,expected also to bankroll any presidential campaign, as well as backing the coup politically and financially for pretty obvious reasons. Have a read of this article and youll see a lot of grubby interests coalescing in this business. It absolutely fucking stinks.

Mr. Pinchuk, 53, is one of Ukraine’s only oligarchs to have deep ties to Washington. Many of the country’s richest businessmen are suspected of having links to organized crime and do not have visas to the United States, much less a relationship with a former and potentially future American president.

Still, Mr. Pinchuk’s image is not without blemish: His father-in-law is Leonid Kuchma, who was president of Ukraine from 1994 to 2005 and led a government criticized for corruption, nepotism and the murder of dissident journalists. As president, Mr. Kuchma privatized a huge state steel factory and sold it to Mr. Pinchuk’s consortium for about $800 million, which competitors said was a laughably low price.

Since 2006, Mr. Pinchuk has donated roughly $13.1 million to the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation. Mr. Clinton attends Mr. Pinchuk’s annual conferences in the resort city of Yalta, Ukraine, and Mr. Pinchuk attended the former president’s 65th birthday party in Los Angeles.

Guys like that cover all the bases, whether a specific one pays off or not. His foundation was also involved with the Israeli Presidential Conference - 'Facing Tomorrow'.

Btw polish cavalry with lances charging panzers was a nazi propaganda myth.
In 1939 the polish cavalry were elite mounted infantry, using their horses to move quickly and deliver them to where they and their support weapons could do the most harm.
They fucked up nazi attack columns more than once, for example at the battle of Mokra where a polish cavalry brigade took on the 4th panzer division and destroyed over 50 tanks.

Really interesting Wikileaks email on the internal political battle to sway influence in Crimea between Russian interests and EU/US/Ukraine nationalist interests. https://www.wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/06KYIV4489_a.html and https://www.wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/06KYIV4425_a.html. Despite Moscow carrying out a well crafted propaganda campaign in Crimea, to me it's no different from the activities carried out by the NED, IRI, RFE and other US/EU NGO groups. However, what I find interesting is both emails highlight Crimea as being a flashpoint and an attempt to counteract Russian influence in the region.

This email is also interesting talking in context of warnings by Sergei Ivanov back in 2006. https://www.wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/08KYIV1201_a.html

Another interesting email is a quote by Tymoshenko were she it says Tymoshenko "unequivocally that as President she would not do anything to lead Ukraine into direct confrontation with Russia -- "this would be insanity." She argued that groups in Crimea are just waiting for Kyiv to take some radical action in order to respond and destabilize the region further. Any drastic action by Kyiv toward the Russian Black Sea Fleet could be such an action." https://www.wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/10KYIV8_a.html.

Anyways, Berkut reconstituted in Crimea after offer of asylum made to all members by its parliament . Russian foreign ministry also offering them all Russian passports due to fascist lynch mobs targetting them and their families . As well as jobs, houses etc . They may also offer Russian passports to other sectors of Ukrainian society .
Kremlin stating too it wont be ignoring Crimeas appeal for assistance . That comes as the new Crimean head honcho claims that firearms have been used in a number of clashes around Crimea and calls on Russia to take measures to keep the peace there .

well, call me old fashioned but i think a fascist coup and all it entails constitutes drastic action .

The Americans are threatening to pull out of this summers G8 summit in Russia, Moscow must be crapping themselves.

im still laughing at this one myself . The threatened US response is somewhat marginally akin to their decision to snub the Sochi Olympics .....wooooo

Putin is being a cunt for sure.

I wonder wether he thought the initial siezure of the parliament would provoke massive pro-russian demonstrations and a Kiev style insurrection by russian nationalists. He would then be able to convincingly argue that this was no different to what happened in the capital. But this has failed to materialise. The impression I get is that Ukriane's ethnic russians are worried but some way from open revolt. Putin has not helped them - or Russia - with his actions. I think - like all authoritarians - he really doesn't understand the organic and spontaneous nature of popular revolts (and - despite clear enabling from opposition parties and the west - the Kiev insurrection was a spontaneous revolt)

Sending in what looks like special forces to secure the airports etc will surely only encourage Ukrainian nationalism and helps legitamise the Kiev regime in the eyes of the rest of the world - jsut as eyebrows where being raised about their behavior and ultra nationalist leanings.
Surely he would have been better just sitting and waiting for the reality of the IMF shock medicine to strike home and the cracks within the new regime to show (like when they try and put right sector back in their box).

And backing Yanukovych? I thought he would kick him to the kerb as a totally discredited figure.

things getting a bit hotter . Crimeans are claiming a group of armed men acting on Kievs orders tried to take the parliament building . Successfully repelled by these self defense squads that are causing such a kerfuffle . If thats true it looks like those idiots are hell bent on escalation .

Just looking at the pics of those squads . Their deliberately non descript kit with total absence of nationalist insignia youd expect from militia, top of the range body armour, most modern variant AKs with fancy scopes and the very confident gait and posture . Has to be said that pretty much screams special forces and not some local militia outfit . Also looks very much like these guys want the media to film them . Not camera shy in the slightest .

Square in front of the parliament building now cleared of the public except for journalists in advance of an anti kiev rally this afternoon .
