Ukraine Failing to Probe Pro-Russia Protester Deaths, Panel Says

Probably generally quiet due to the failure to draw Russia directly into a proxy conflict on its border. Perhaps there are more promising opportunities elsewhere (Armenia vs Azerbaijan, Transnistria, Moldovias looking pearshaped... plans for a coup in Georgia by the tie-muncher got rumbled and leaked). Always the hope of Russian boots in Syria though... live in hope, hang in there Lockheed cru.

The Ukrainians brought all this on themselves. The 'exiles' round here have all gone a bit mad and fallen out with all their Russian 'exile' mates.

The IMF forgives Ukraine’s debt to Russia
Michael Hudson. December 09, 2015
On December 8, the IMF’s Chief Spokesman Gerry Rice sent a note saying:

“The IMF’s Executive Board met today and agreed to change the current policy on non-toleration of arrears to official creditors. We will provide details on the scope and rationale for this policy change in the next day or so.”
For over half a year there was a semi-public discussion with U.S. Treasury advisors and Cold Warriors about how to stiff Russia on the $3 billion owed by Ukraine to Russia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund. There was some talk of declaring this an “odious debt,” but it was decided that this ploy might backfire against U.S. supported dictatorships.

In the end, the IMF simply lent Ukraine the money.
IMF change the rules as there's a war on but still no help for Greece.

Ukraine halts $3bn Russia debt repayment
18/12/15
Ukraine will not repay a $3bn debt owed to Russia by this weekend, claiming Russia has refused to accept repayment terms already offered to other international creditors.

The moratorium means that Ukraine is likely to default on the debt, which is due on Sunday.

In addition, repayment of $507m of Ukrainian commercial debt held by Russian banks will also be halted.

Ukraine banning the communist party.

Worrying news in the current context even though they are a bunch of pro russian chauvinists, still one of the largest parties in the country iirc

Ukraine warns west to beware Russian ally in Syria
FT 21/12/15
Ukraine is urging the west not to lose focus on Russia’s aggression in the east of the country as Moscow styles itself as an ally in the war against Isis.

Senior officials in Kiev are fearful that a “pivot to Syria” by Russian President Vladimir Putin is blinding western countries to Moscow’s continued shelling and attacks in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine. They stress that Ukrainian soldiers are dying every week.

In response to concerns over an EU rapprochement with Moscow, Ukrainian leaders have spoken out forcefully against a recent European plan to import more Russian gas to Germany through a new pipeline. The project could rob Kiev of €2bn of annual gas transit fees, which are vital to the country’s fragile economy.

Russian minister says cancelling Nord Stream-2 would be 'shot in foot'
Reuters 21/12/15
Failure to go ahead with the Nord Stream gas pipeline expansion to double gas shipment from Russia's Baltic coast to Germany, bypassing Ukraine, would be "a shot in the foot," Russian Economy Minister Alexei Ulyukayev said on Monday.

"Failing to implement it now would be a shot in one's foot from the side of whoever would want to do it," Ulyukayev told a briefing in Brussels.

"This is about Europe's energy balance, safeguarding security of supplies, these are most important questions."

After Default to Putin, What's Next for Ukraine-Russia Bond Row
20/12/15
While there are signs the two sides are willing to reach an out-of-court settlement, a legal battle in the U.K., either through the court system or arbitration, is a growing possibility. Just hours after the moratorium was imposed, Russian Deputy Finance Minister Sergey Storchak reiterated that Moscow will sue, saying Ukraine has "no chance of winning this case." Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday ordered the government to prepare a lawsuit.

I fear where this seems to be heading.

Russia Sues Ukraine in London Court Over $3 Billion Default
February 17, 2016
Russia has to pursue legal action against Ukraine in the U.K. because the bond was structured under English Law. President Vladimir Putin bought the debt in December 2013 to bail out his former Ukrainian counterpart and ally, Viktor Yanukovych, just months before he was toppled and Russia annexed Crimea. The notes were priced to yield 5 percent, less than half the rate on Ukrainian notes at the time.
Taking the case to the court system means that details will be heard in public. Under the bond documents, Russia also had the option to take the dispute to the London Court of International Arbitration, where proceedings would have been held behind closed doors.

Tymoshenko's party quits Ukrainian government coalition
17.02.2016
Even without Fatherland's 19 lawmakers, the government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk holds a three-seat majority in the 450-seat Kyiv parliament. However, cracks have long been visible among the other three parties in the governing coalition, and the prime minister's approval rating has occasionally dipped under 1 percent.

On Wednesday, Tymoshenko urged other factions to join hers and retract support due to slow reforms.
