Ukraine

Slavyansk is completely surrounded and has been being bombarded for days now. Mortars have fallen in residential areas and more civillians have been killed. The DPR claim is over 100 dead, 50 or so of which, they claim, are not DPR militia. One incident, I gather, is apparently the blowing up by one means or another of a truck full of wounded DPR militia which supposedly killed at least 24 in one go. There are photos of the corpses of DPR men piling up in mortuaries.

The government isn't giving any counter-figures for the dead beyond "tens of people".

An Italian journalist and an interpreter have been killed, and reportedly a French journalist injured.

I'll be amazed if there isn't a mass civilian death-toll event - mortar into a flat block etc. - by the end of the week. Is any of this carried in the mainstream press? I haven't been looking.
Psychiatric clinic shelled.

Konstantin Kuzmin, DPR's coal industry minister, claims that the workers of 6 Donbass mines are now on indefinite strike until the army and National Guard leave the area.

Lyashko got about 8.3% of the vote, not far behind Tymoshenko.

nah, the BBC for example is just talking about seperatist militants being killed, not a bit about civilians . But as its generally the western medias job to be an instrument of government policy its no surprise.

Its noteworthy that now we are seeing the miners abandon their stance on neutrality and take to the streets over this all out assault on their region.

the fascists shall not pass

I'd hope not, but sadly it probably is. I think someone posted something further up the thread that indicated that during Soviet times the Bandera types had a monopoly of political leadership among the Ukrainian diaspora in North America.

they still do, and much like their fellow fascist scum who hightailed it from Cuba they in turn have been assimilated into the mainstream US political structures along with their fascist line.

Casually Red - you are aware of conflicting reports that say the Donbass miners were threatened by armed DPR gangs that if they went to work or didn't show support for the separatists they would blow up the mineshafts with them trapped down there?

There was a link. It seemed as reliable (not very) as thee rest of the second hand stuff coming out of Donetsk. I don't think even the BBC are in Slovyansk. The new president surely understands that we have now reached the point of no return? Partition is almost a certainty now. How can the country stay together after all of this. The number of casualties is staggering... a Ukrainian general has even been killed.

That's Jay Blackwood - local serial party joiner and would fuser of fourth international trotskyism and surrealism - been through socialist resistance, green party and now left unity in the last few years. That position above is fairly standard across a lot of the more orthodox old-left i think.
Jay turned up at the meeting about Ukraine we had last night. Handing out leaflets about uniting the anti-fascist resistance. Very fractious meeting btw. Depressing and demoralising.

what's this about a putsch in the donetsk republic with the "vostok batallion" taking over?

got some more links btw.

looks like a full-on civil war now. :(

It was a sign of the growing dominance of the military wing of the rebel forces over the political wing, or wings, and came shortly after Ukrainian troops hammered separatist forces, including the Vostok Battalion on Monday, leaving more than 50 dead, including the 33 Russians.
“These men are just as dangerous to the Donbass as the Ukrainians,” said Viktor, one of few rebel soldiers who did not use a code name, speaking of the separatists who had been evicted. As he spoke, he and dozens of other fighters drank tea in the lobby of the administration building, which has been seized and reseized by government and multiple pro-Russian forces more than a half-dozen times in the last several months.

I wonder what our socially conservative, clean living and law and order posters think of their support of what is actually becoming open banditry.

The southeast of the country is a war zone, in all but name.

Last week, not far from Donetsk in southeastern Ukraine, a man wearing only camouflage underpants, with a stained sleeveless shirt, and brandishing a Kalashnikov assault rifle, demanded to see my passport. Over the past decade, lots of men with all sorts of weapons have asked me for my ID – some of them were far from pleasant, but at least they were all decently wearing trousers. My first impulse was to suggest that he get dressed before asking other people for identification documents. But his Kalashnikov made me reconsider, and I handed over the passport with a bright smile.

The taxi driver who drove us to the train station grumbled on the way, 'I’m not pro-Kiev, I’m not anti-Kiev, I just want someone to stop this mess.' Many people we spoke to in the southeast feel precisely the same, and crave normal life above and beyond anything else.

The car, a local resident told us, had been 'confiscated' from a man who had dared break the curfew, and drive around at night. Anti-Kyiv insurgents spray-painted it in camouflage colours, smashed the windows, cut out a 'skylight' in the roof, and drove around at top speed, with their Kalashnikovs sticking out. It would have been funny if the place weren’t increasingly becoming more like a war zone, mortar strikes included.

He's apparently organising some demo in Bristol in solidarity with the meeting at SOAS with Kargalitsky, Borotba (via Skype), Andrew Murray, Lyndsey German, Alan Woods etc. Their facebook site has just had someone celebrating Assad and Mugabe amongst others as "our" leaders in the anti-imperialist resistance.

Yes, on wednesday - that what the leaflet was about. No one will turn up apart from the old soviet patriots and conspiracy loons who turned up last night. About 5 of them. Mad staring eyes.

Probably from a polish SAM captured in Georgia.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the holodomor denial by the soviet patriots last night. Jay didn't say a effin' word as they outlined their google it dudes nonsense.

Are they at least getting paid to shill?
These people were just freaks - the mentally dispossessed and the same sort of people who took a side in the cold war. The main holodomor denialist was a girl i'd guess at about 20 though - poss an aussie or kiwi.

Yep. As blatant as that. There will be a statement on the BRHG (as hosts) site about this later.

For fucks sake - its unquestionable that huge numbers of Ukrainians died and while it may not have been 'genocide' the decimation of resistance to the regime and destruction of Ukrainian social and political life cannot have been a bad or unwanted thing for the regime as it was in Ireland :(
