TV series recommendations general (excluding Netflix/ Amazon)

Wow. That’s quite the recommendation!

Is it still hanging around somewhere? It was years ago, wasn’t it?
Aye, it's one of the all-time greats for me.

Just had a quick squizz, and it's on Nowtv. I'd get a subscription just for that, and then cancel when you're done. It's on Prime too but you have to pay for each episode on there.

I watched The Wire again and it was superb. I got so much more out of it second time around and didn't know what was coming next most of the time. If you haven't watched it again I highly recommend it.
I've watched The Sopranos 3 times. I'm waiting another couple of years and then gonna watch it again

Damn, for some reason my TV (new!) won’t play the Now app. Apparently, and I didn’t know this, not all smart TVs will play all the apps and you have to check before you buy! FFS.

I’d have to set up a phone or laptop and cast it to the TV somehow. And who wants to be arsed with that?

Noooo! That's a right fucker! I would check the other streaming channels periodically then, see if it turns up.

I resisted getting a smart tv for YEARS. We are always the last people we know to get anything new, tech-wise :D

We just used to connect our laptop to the telly with an HDMI cable to stream stuff. Possibility?

Having just got a firestick, I’m amazed at how frictionless piracy is compared with navigating umpteen different streaming services and having to put up with adverts.

I'm going to do that at some point.
I watched loads of episodes but missed quite a few too. In the days before streaming if you missed an episode it was just tough. So I've never really seen it in order to follow the story arcs properly.

I will go back and watch Treme again at some point.

I love The Wire and The Sopranos but I've never wanted to watch them again as I might not remember every detail but I remember the overarching plots and themes of every series.

I have the boxset of The Sopranos

I desperately need to get round to setting one of those up to give it a go. Especially on the non smart TV with a very old laptop streaming to it.

I watched an episode of Industry, it was all people shouting at each other cos they were less or more of a prick than the other person thought they were. And then they all betrayed each other to get a pay rise or make the boss like them and absolutely fuck that. Wankers.

Yeah, we do too. It’s well worth rewatching.

I never got in with the Wire though. I struggled all the way through season one, due to heckling from here telling me it gets better. Finally people started saying it only picks up on season three. I really don’t want to give anything that amount of commitment to get good. I know people love it, but to me it just seemed very hackneyed and stereotyped. Except for the “realistic” camera work. Which doesn’t replace character and narrative for me.

I loved S1 of The Wire, not mad keen on S2, loved S3 and all from that point on. Still not as good as The Sopranos though.

Me too. I never pirated films or TV and never will. It’s just a step in never going to take.
I did it a couple of times after some tuition from my lass, but she gave me so many dire warnings about stuff, it shit me up, so I just stopped doing it. I don't wanna fuck up expensive equipment. I'll just wait for a 3 months free sub on a channel that's streaming something I wanna watch.

I couldn’t get past the 1970s liberal racist trope of the “magic black guy” in the office. It seemed so dated. It annoyed me. Total “noble savage” stereotype. In the 21st century. No thank you.

(In my opinion. Don’t @ me).

Yeah. I bought the Wire season one on DVD for that very reason. At the time it was that or nothing really.

If you get one, don’t ask Spymaster for advice - he’ll recommend a service that works on browsers, but can’t actually be installed on a firestick, as I found out after paying for a month’s usage.

All you need is the Downloader app, Cinema HD and a subscription to a service called Real Debrid. Then you’re away. There are dozens of alternatives to Cinema HD, but all of them need Real Debrid to provide smooth, encrypted streams.
