If it were an almost true story, though, based on real events about living people, they'd be in trouble for saying that. So not quite the same thing.

Fwiw I'm not going on what Fiona Harvey says she has or hasn't done, but Gadd himself.

He was stalked and harassed though - don't know why Petcha's so determined to pretend that part isn't true. And the show did seem to be emotionally honest.

The jokes aren't really the jokes in this though. It seems to be a sub Stewart Lee attempt to do metacommentary on standup comedy. It's not brilliant, particularly because its derivative, but it's not what you're suggesting either.
