Tiverton and Honiton by-election

We've had paedo guy and tractor porn guy now - who are the next fruity sleazebags who will step up to the challenge of losing the Tories another seat?

When I went to bed in early hours, I thought that the lib Dems would get close in tiverton I wake this to see the Tories have a triple whammy 🤣

Hurford was running for political office surely it goes that anyone doing so accepts the possibility that they might lose? She needs to put on her big girl pants and accept defeat gracefully. She did seem a crap candidate though, her performance at that public session was bizarre.
Is there any mechanism other than asking him "Pretty Please" for the Tories to get shut of BoZo or have they shot themselves in the foot for the next 12 months?

The 12 month rule is a party thing, so the party could change its rules. i don't know enough about how the vermin party works to know whether a rule change that would have to be voted on by members, or go to annual party conference, or whether the parliamentary party can do it.

The 1922 committee can change that rule.

A few high profile cabinet resignations ought to do it. I can’t see him lasting much longer to be honest. However, you never know with this shower of shite.
I think he’s a man of delusion, those that resign won’t have the fortitude or the genes. He’ll believe in himself until he’s ingested by Penguins or hanging upside down in the texaco in Crown Point.

Christ, I thought he was off 2 years ago, and posted that on here. I thought he'd "Get Brexit Done" and retire on his laurels.

Now, I'm convinced he'll have to be dragged kicking and screaming from Downing St. Or fed to the penguins, clearly.

He doesn't give a fck what anyone thinks.

Yeah he's already so far beyond the point where anyone with any sense of propriety would've fucked off that I can't imagine a scenario where he actually quits rather than being forced out.

There are a lot of things to take into consideration that complicates things. Those ‘Red Wall’ Tory MPs know that they’ll mostly all lose their seats at the next election so are probably reticent about rocking the boat now and will just want to milk as much out of their position as possible now.

There is no rule to say a general election must be called after a PM resigns but it is convention that it happens soon afterwards so you can see the position those MPs face.

The leader of the opposition can also call a motion of no confidence that the government must schedule for debate in the commons, whereas if it comes from any other MP the government can shut it down. Starmer has that power but is not using so Labour are not confident they can win that vote at this stage, or maybe they are willing to play the waiting game knowing they’ll win if Boris is in power.

Which leads me to my last point, surely the cabinet and Tory hierarchy know that they can’t win a GE with Boris at the helm. So they need to do something about it, which is why I can’t see him lasting much longer. There is the slight possibility that they are willing to spend 5 years in the wilderness and hope to get back in 2029 after an overhaul of the party. It’s a tricky one I honestly don’t think they are Machiavellian enough to be thinking about the schematics of these things, they’re just dumb posh fucks who are scared of Boris. We shall see.

dunno

james callaghan, john major and gordon brown all stayed put until well in to the 5th year of the parliament's term rather than calling an election at around the 4 year mark, each serving as PM for 2 - 3 years*. theresa may was the exception, because the initial signs in 2017 were that she would get an increased majority. oops.

* ETA - before calling the election that is. john major was the odd one out as he won the next election (much to everyone's surprise including probably his own) so of course was PM longer than that.

Boris has got that Eton instilled sense of entitlement that means he will carry on.

Too many Tory MPs are likely to lose their seats in a GE at the moment to try to get rid of him at the moment.

I don't know the rules, but if Labour can call a no confidence vote, the tories have a big enough majority to win the vote. There are too many tory MPs for whom this is the only job they are ever going to get where they can make £80k a year plus expenses. Like Johnson, they will cling on.

Those more established tories in "safe" seats that have been around a long time may be getting worried though.

True but those were before the Fixed Term Parliament Act and there was pressure to call an election with all those PMs at the time. I think there is some leeway for the Tories in the event but the political landscape as it is will call for it. It’s hard to say with an uncodified constitution which plays into their hands. Starmer definitely has the power to call a vote of no confidence that’s for sure, we await to see if that happens.

Fixed term parliament act has been repealed now.
