The Virgin Mary

You've clearly got no interest in this thread apart from being rude to him, so why not just leave us all in peace?
Thank you. I've no problem with "mixing it up" in a healthy fashion, with other posters whose views are different

but ouirdeaux attempts to "credential" me which is a form of "doxing". these calls for my credentials in order to express views here is not proper and against forum rules

further, the ad hominem attacks and 3rd rate insults have gotten this poster prior, stern warnings from moderation

Posting links without any attempt to express one's own opinion is very boring, and also prohibited by this site, but that's what this poster does. Life is like that, sadly. Perhaps I should start reporting it.

Not sure what's left to go over. The half-baked OP prompted a 52 pager!
There is lots to think and talk about in this article

How did all this influence my devotion to Mary? It was quite simple. Since Jesus said, “I have come not to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it,” I was able to apply what I was taught as a Jew regarding holy places and sacred objects to our Blessed Mother Mary. In the Holy of Holies of the original Temple, God’s presence appeared in the form of a cloud. But in Mary’s womb Jesus, our Creator and God, was conceived in His human nature and lived for nine months before His birth. Therefore, the womb of Mary is certainly more holy than the Holy of Holies. The Holy of Holies contained the sacred Ark of the Covenant. But in Mary’s womb resided the Covenant Maker; she is, therefore, the True Ark. This is why I believe strongly, as the Church teaches, that Mary remained a virgin all her life. I could never imagine that Mary and Joseph, being most pious Jews, would ever allow another human being to be conceived in the same womb where the Son of God was conceived in the flesh by the Holy Spirit. As for the sacred Torah, it is a scroll that contains the written word of God. Within the womb of Mary resided the Word Himself, our Lord and God. With the help of the Holy Spirit, I was able to see why I owed far greater devotion to and reverence for Mary than I had for all those people, objects and places sacred and holy to ancient Israel and Jews of today.

bcuster one consistent problem with things you link to is that it is people saying Jesus said such and such instead of saying eg. John reports Jesus saying such and such. This way all the New Testament writers lose their identity.

I know immediately that that quote is from Matthew, because only Matthew has Jesus say anything positive about the Jewish law.

Contrast with Paul (Galatians)

Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith." The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them." Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole." He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

This is not just to point out a contradiction between Matthew's Jesus and Paul. But, correct me if I'm wrong, the Catholic church is very much on team Paul on this one, as are almost all modern day Christians.

A thread about a woman... totally taken over by a weirdo who wants only to talk about all the men who wrote the bible.

Poor Mary hasn't had much of a look in at all.

As a Catholic..who lapsed for a while...and then returned...I find that the Rosary prayer is helpful. I find all.prayer makes a difference in my life but especially the Rosary. It's a prayer given to humanity by Our Lady through St Dominic.

The Story of St. Dominic

It is widely believed that in 1214 St. Dominic had a vision of Mary. She is said to have presented him with the rosary, both the beads and the prayers to be prayed.

Dominic had a tremendous devotion to Mary and the rosary, which he promoted wherever he traveled to preach. He encouraged Catholics to gather in small groups to pray together what was an early form of the rosary together. These were quite possibly the first expressions of the prayer groups and small group communities that are still having a powerful impact today.

The prayer has made its way through history since then. Our Lady has repeatedly emphasised at different apparition worldwide that the Rosary prayer is special and powerful.

What are Marian Apparitions?

Throughout history, people around the world have reported appearances of Mary, the Mother of God. She comes down from heaven to earth to encourage us in our Catholic faith. We hear messages of hope and healing, and, most importantly, messages calling us back to her son, Jesus. The Church evaluates these appearances and carefully approves ones believed to be true.

How Are Marian Apparitions Approved?

A Marian apparition is first evaluated by the Bishop of the diocese in which it appeared. The Vatican can also evaluate an apparition further. There is a set criteria the Vatican utilizes to determine whether or not an apparition is valid, including an evaluation of the character of the person who witnessed the apparition.

The most popular Marian apparitions are both Vatican and Bishop approved. This is not to say that Bishop approved apparitions are less important, simply that the Vatican has not specifically looked into them.

Popular Marian Apparitions

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Beginning in 1531, Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego and asked him to erect a church in her honor. The Archbishop did not believe Juan Diego. During the fourth apparition, Mary arranged flowers in Juan Diego’s cloak. When he once again petitioned the Archbishop to build a church, he opened his cloak, the flowers fell to the floor, and the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was visible on the fabric. This image is still visible at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City and is a popular pilgrimage destination.
Our Lady of Lourdes

In 1858, Mary appeared to 14-year-old St. Bernadette in the small French town of Lourdes. Our Lady appeared 18 times, encouraging people to pray and return to God. She urged people to pray the rosary, and called herself the Immaculate Conception. Mary also helped St. Bernadette discover a miraculous spring with healing waters. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel to Lourdes annually to pray and experience healing.

Our Lady of Medjugorje

Mary first appeared to six children in 1981 in the town of Medjugorje in the Southeastern European country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. She encourages us to return to God through prayer, fasting, reading the Bible, Confession, and the Eucharist.

Our Lady of Good Help

Champion, Wisconsin is the only Church-approved apparition site in the United States. Mary appeared to Adele Brise in 1859, asking her to pray for the conversion of sinners and to teach the nearby children of the Catholic faith.

Our Lady of Akita

On the fifth-sixth anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, in 1973, Mary appeared to Sister Agnes Sasagawa in Akita, Japan. Her message was for the world to repent and pray the rosary.

Marian Devotions

Mary appears to bring hope, healing, and to remind us to center our faith in life. It’s important to remember that Catholics don’t worship Mary. We honor her as our Mother and guide to her son, Jesus. There are many ways to focus our relationship with God. Love and devotion to Mary have been a part of Christianity that can be traced back to the very first Christians. Many holy men and women of monumental virtue considered Mary to be a sure path to a deep relationship with God. They have surrendered themselves completely to Mary’s protection and guidance, begging her to lead them ever closer to her son.

Popular devotions include:

 • Wearing the Miraculous Medal
 • Wearing a scapular
 • Praying novenas (a nine-day set of prayers for a specific intention)
 • Consecrating themselves to Jesus through Mary
 • Praying the Rosary

For anyone who may have an interest in Mary.

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John might have all been women, you know.
entirely possible. Saint Mary Magdalene is one of the most important of Jesus' disciples and a strong evangelist of the faith

Mary Magdalene[a] (sometimes called Mary of Magdala, or simply the Magdalene or the Madeleine) was a woman who, according to the four canonical gospels, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers and was a witness to his crucifixion and resurrection.[1] She is mentioned by name twelve times in the canonical gospels, more than most of the apostles and more than any other woman in the gospels, other than Jesus's family. Mary's epithet Magdalene may be a toponymic surname, meaning that she came from the town of Magdala, a fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee in Roman Judea.

For anyone wishing to pray the rosary this is a guide.

Do we know that much about either Mary really?

The genealogy of Mary.

I had remembered that it was said she was descended from David.
But this is an interesting document..showing a descent from the tribes of Levi and also Judah.

Might be of interest to those who want to know about Mary.

There are lots Mary's in the New Testament. Mary of Bethany, Mary of Clopas as well, possibly one or two more.
Mary of Bethany is Martha's sister, I'd forgotten she was known as that. Don't know Mary of Clopas. Oh, ok, just looked and she was present at the crucifixion; think I'd had her mixed up with another Mary. My biblical knowledge is patchy.

The evidence we have for the unlikely idea of Christianity -- i.e., the Bible, and any apocryphal writings you want to throw into the mix -- was written by men. The Catholic Church, of course, notoriously discouraged the laity from reading the Bible for themselves, preferring them to be spoon-fed what was deemed appropriate. Although it's a bit more liberal now, there are plenty of Catholics who prefer the old ways, because reading is hard, man.

All men, as far as I'm aware. Have I missed something? The Roman Catholic church, where only men get to administer sacraments, isn't really something to appeal to when trying to look like a feminist. Not that the other varieties of the Christian nonsense are much better, but you're not doing your argument much good with this one.
Poor Mary
Oh, I don't know. If you strip the supernatural guff away from the story, you've got a young woman who's had a bit of sex and become pregnant in a society where that really wasn't the sort of thing one should be doing without being married, and being stoned isn't much fun, at least not with actual stones. But she's managed to find a husband quickly enough to get away with it, and told him a cock-and-bull story that's taken him in. Well, a no-cock-but-holy-spirit story, to be pedantic. Not only that, it's taken in the gullible ever since.

Ok. We all.know you don't have any belief in Mary or Jesus or anything relating to Christianity.
That point has been made ...
You're not converting me to atheism. I've been to that side before.and it was empty and horrible.
I'm happy with my faith...I may not believe everything completely... but I do have faith in Our Lady..and the Eucharist.
Trash them all you like.
Trash Christians all you like.
Trash me all you like.
I've had everything thrown at me my entire life and the only peace I've ever found is through my faith.
Believe me..I've experienced witchcraft and tarot and more...and had curses directed at me..... but Christianity as in my belief in Jesus Christ and the blood of Jesus as was given up for all of us.....and the love and guidance of his holy Mother..have brought me more calm and peace and faith and hope than anything..ever..in my entire life. I'm sincerely writing this so I would hope you don't trash my post...

So I'm not going to defend my Catholic faith to you ... I don't need to..I'm living it. I may not get to Mass every Sunday but I do what I can. And I know that prayer does have an impact...because it has had a massive impact on my life.
There are things that I have experienced that I could never say here. Nobody would believe me for one. And the ridicule would be massive. But I know that there is a higher creative force for good and I know the power of prayer. Some might say it's positive thoughts.. but prayer is much more..its an absolute belief and trust that no matter what happens good or bad....there is love and spiritual support ready all the time. Even in the darkest hour.

I appreciate what you are saying. For you, your faith is a source of strength. I am happy for you.
However, can you not see that the long tract that you copy and pasted earlier about Marian apparitions, etc, is very tedious to read for someone who is not a believer, and is not going to make them re-think their position?

It's there for those who may want to understand a bit more.

I'm definitely not trying to convert anyone. But someone might actually want to know about the apparitions as this thread is about Holy Mary.

I mean..sorry..to the non believers for posting about Mary on a thread about Mary..

Eta.
I don't know how to write about Mary without writing about Mary.

It's not so much that you were posting about Mary, it's that you did a huge copy and paste, which people find tedious, on any thread.
