The UK government and artificial intelligence

Given the low level of actual intelligence in the govt, etc etc....

Sir Kieir has a big boner for AI and building datacentres up and down the country:

A friend of mind has written an article for Computer Weekly explaining why this is bollocks and will help the far right:

At best, the govt is doing a huge landgrab (literally and financially) for tech companies. For example the claim that
  • public sector to spend less time doing admin and more time delivering the services working people rely on

Is a fairly obvious funneling of money out of the public sector and into the coffers of Silicon Valley.

At worst it will just... make everything worse. There are already example of AI being let loose on the benefits systems in France and the Netherlands and effectively criminalising thousands of marginalised people.

AI also does not get to the root of the problem of the general en-shitification of life in the UK for most of us - which is essentially the fertilser from which a thousand far right flowers will bloom.

The Computer Weekly piece suggests "decomputing" which is interesting - but more importantly that local democracy and care is prioritised over big bollocks tech solutions.

Maybe everything will be ok though...? ;)

Hopes and fears. On the balance, I don't like it, because I worry about AI in general, don't think we have the funds with muck around with it, don't think they're speaking to the right people about it (from the very limited sideways glance I've given this topic).

I can see some potential benefits. Leaving tech in the hands of the private sector could be worse, so maybe the government should get in on it. Emerging technologies are worth investing in if you want to lead rather than follow.

It's a big gamble and even if I assume it's done in good faith, it exceeds my risk tolerance.
