The Truth About Chlorinated Chicken review – Channel 4 doc

This is such a croc of shit, remain has latched on to chlorinated chicken as it sounds grim as fuck and that's what Brexiteers will be stuffing down our throats, but in itself it is not bad in any way, shape or form; we had it until 1997, fruit and veg comes washed in the stuff. Vegan remainers can't compute.

Great source that. Here's the actual quote: "In the UK 76% of the fresh produce industry uses Chlorine for washing organic produce demonstrating the widespread acceptance of chlorine-based disinfectants for food disinfection."

That's a commercial operation promoting their own 'salad washes' and it's a little bit vague. Foodsaf | Hydrachem

Can you provide an independent source that supports the suggested claim that 76% of all fruit and vegetables are chlorinated please?

Who are these 'vegan remainers' and why are they being singled out here? Do you think they're the only people against chlorinated chicken?

Oh, it's just nonsense. It's nothing really to do with food safety, though. It's just an anti-EU rant.

For some reason you're fixating on just the first link from the search, expand your horizons down the page...

Fruit and veg in the EU is routinely washed in chlorine, there's nothing controversial there.

The whole chlorinated chicken thing is an anti-brexit shtick which doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

To be fair doesn't everything get washed in chlorinated water in the end.

Posting up random screengrabs of Google really isn't helping you back up your claims at all. Can you provide an actual credible independent source or not? It's a simple question, but one you seem determined to wriggle out of.

Funny thing is, those commercial links don't even fully support your claims.

Agreed, there's no real issue about food being washed in chlorine, bearing in mind chlorine is added to our tap water, so any food we wash at home is basically washed in chlorine.

The problem seems to be, according to the documentary, which is well worth watching, is it's being used as an excuse in the US to lower hygiene measures in the factory production of the finished product, resulting in deaths, as washing in chlorine isn't 100% effective, 90% at best in lab tests.

For you, it doesn't stand up to scrutiny because it has been chosen by pro-EU/pro remain types (being a newish subset of anti US-UK FTA types) as a symbol of where the US wants to take us.

So there's no point arguing about chicken, or chlorine, or workers' rights, is there?

Pfft! I think the people have had enough of experts. :p

Exactly. Like I said, covering up for poor animal welfare.

From the documentary it was more a case of covering up poor hygiene and poor logistical processes (which meant they could not get the chicken through the system fast enough to keep up with hygiene requirements).

Not arguing against your point, but animal welfare was barely mentioned.

Exactly. Like I said, covering up for poor animal welfare.

The documentary didn't really cover animal welfare, it was about what went on in the production chain, the poor handling of dead meat & living humans, minus a few fingers here & there.

Freidaweed even provided a massive fucking picture.
So are chlorinated chickens washed under a household tap? Are you suggesting it's exactly the same stuff that is used to chlorinate chickens?

The level of chlorine in tap water is very low in England and Wales which contrasts very favourably with practices in other countries where much higher levels are common. Typically water companies keep the level of residual disinfectant in the form of free or combined chlorine to 0.5 mg/l or less.

I can't be arsed to argue with this idiot anymore.

Despite some typically unsupported claims to the contrary, it looks like it's not just 'remainers' who aren't so keen on chowing down on the chlorinated stuff:

Opening the UK up to meat imports from countries such as the US could ultimately reduce demand for domestic meat, new research by the AHDB has suggested.

Allowing imports of products such as chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-treated beef after Brexit could negatively affect the UK meat sector, the research showed, with four out of five shoppers claiming they would change the way they shopped.

More than half of the 1,007 people polled by YouGov for the AHDB stated they would buy less chicken and beef if these products hit UK supermarket shelves. Just 28% of respondents said there would be no change at all to the amount of chicken they bought, with the figure at 29% for beef.

Half of shoppers to desert meat if UK allows chlorinated chicken imports

DEFRA recommend you don't wash chicken under a household tap, they recommend you cook it thoroughly, washing under in tap water just moves the bacteria around the carcass.

I think editor 's point is that they are *not* washed under a household tap. But at the plant they are washed in a pretty strong chlorine solution to hoprfully get the poo off.

Editor's asking about fruit and veg, but in his fury got in a tizzy and muddled it all up.
