Are you claiming that your brief visit or visits to the US and communication with a few Americans, has given you an equivalent insight into US liberals, as you have of liberals in the country you live in?

In concert with other sources of information, yeah sure why not.

Because it's highly unlikely [although granted, not entirely impossible], that you are equally expert about the politics of a country you mostly read about online; and the one you've lived in and experienced since childhood.

I don't see why you would think that, I've met plenty of British people who have far better knowledge of the history and politics of countries as diverse as Venezuela, Russia, Spain, Prussia, Ancient Roman etc than they do their own country's history.

That's different from 'equivalent expertise', which is what you seem to be claiming.

Yes but the other person (the guy with the nuclear football) has zero authority to countermand once authenticated. … But as they say in the podcast the President has sole authority and that alone is sufficient i.e. legally the President's orders must be followed.
No one, not me, not the podcast, not anything you’ve referred to, suggested “the guy with the nuclear football” had any authority. That’s not their role. The president has sole authority to order an attack. Two people are required to authenticate this; the second person has been prepared to intervene in the past. The material you point to confirms that - try listening to it/reading it.

I reckon, or willfully hope, that even that woman I mentioned meeting (fervent islamophobe) has plenty of potential to be disappointed by trump. She kept saying 'give him a chance'. Maybe by the time the next election comes around she will feel that he let her down and will be open to alternatives. I think that's very possible.
Yes - some people who voted for Trump are already regretting this - the "I didn't believe he would really defund Planned Parenthood!" and the "He said he'd drain the swamp but cotdamn, he's just put more corrupt rich people in it," types. Others may regret it in future, when their health care coverage is axed, the promised jobs never come, they're caught in a big public health outbreak/natural disaster and help doesn't come, etc. If they take their heads out of their fundaments long enough to understand why these things happened (no, it wasn't the Chinese, the Muslims, the gays or God punishing everyone for not being faithful enough,) they will figure out how NOT to vote GOP next time.

The problem is though, when the result of the Trump administration and Republican congress' actions bites a Trumpite/Tea Partier in the butt, they will do anything possible to believe that something else is to blame, not their ideology and not their leaders. We've already seen how Trump voters have eagerly swallowed stories peddled by Breitbart, InfoWars, etc., so it won't be that hard to cook up some garbage they'll believe instead of facts.

I don't know if you met the woman in the UK, but I'm confident there will be Trump supporters who visit, tour London or wherever, even talk to local people, but still go back home believing the very same tripe about Londinistan, Sharia law, gay couples kissing on every corner or whatever it was they believed before they came.

You've got to remember when it comes to fundamentalist Christians, belief for them is everything. Whatever they see, do, hear or experience, if it contradicts the teachings of their church and their faith, it will be rejected. They will accept the most preposterous explanations for things they read, hear, see or even experience first hand, so long as it means they don't have to question their belief. Doubting leads to sin. Sin leads to Hell. Also, lose your faith can mean being rejected by your church, your community, even your family. I suspect some who's faith isn't 100% bone fide stick to the script for this reason.

Fundamentalist Christians form a huge block of Trump supporters, and they apply the same faith they have in God to their faith in their political leaders. Reaching out to them is a waste of time.

An Iowa lawmaker who is pushing a controversial bill that caps the number of Democrats that state universities can hire as professors claimed on a government website that he got a "business degree" from the "Forbco Management school."

But State Sen. Mark Chelgren's alleged alma mater is actually a company that operated a Sizzler steak house franchise in southern California and he doesn't have a "degree," Ed Failor, a spokesman for the Iowa State Republicans, told NBC News.

Clearly, so me here think I'm making too big a deal about the impact of institutional racism in the US.

I mentioned it further upthread but I'm curious, have any of you seen the Ava DuVerney documentary 13th yet? It's on Netflix. If you haven't, I strongly recommend it.

It's well researched and methodical and explains how and why white supremacy is embedded within the fabric of the USA, from the African slave trade to the prison industrial complex and the racist rhetoric of Trump in the election, eaten up like candy by his supporters.

Watch this and then come back to me and tell me race is just a "side issue," in American politics.

Giant Fiscal Bloodbath Coming Soon-David Stockman | Greg Hunter’s USAWatchdog

Can't help wondering... whatcha gonna do Trump? I assume he has a game plan. If it wasn't for his promises about tax-cuts, building stupid walls and shovelling more money into Americas sprawling war machine, I'd half expect him as a Republican (sort of) to just just shrug and let things lapse because 'fiscal responsibility'.

That is a big story. But seems to be under the radar of the mainstream media

They will probably extend it, they really really dont want a fight with a Republican president they just elected. But it will be a short one so they can keep him on a leash.

Rationally, they have no option but to extend...but its a major faultline within the republican party and understandably, US debt to GDP is currently 104.17%

Synagogue hate crime suspect an educated, suburban accountant

Stuart Wright has two tattoos. On his left arm is the phrase “Jesus Is Love,” according to police. On his right shoulder, a swastika.

Wright, 31, was charged with a hate crime for allegedly smashing the window of a downtown synagogue and putting swastika stickers on its doors in early February. Three months earlier, he alarmed members when he visited a Pilsen church, one that was a target of racist vandalism six times in 2016.

According to Wright’s LinkedIn profile, he worked as an accountant for four companies between June 2012 and September 2015. He became a certified public accountant in 2013 and his license is valid until September 2018, according to state records.

Property records show Wright’s father — a retired investment banker — owns a five-bedroom, six-bathroom house with a three-car garage in west suburban Oak Brook. It has been for sale since February 2016 with a price tag of nearly $1.5 million.

Holy shit - this man is a US citizen. He can't leave the US for fear they might not let him back in.

Gold Star father Khizr Khan has canceled a scheduled speech in Toronto after being told his "travel privileges are being reviewed," according to the event organizer.

Khan, who has lived in the U.S. since 1980 and is a naturalized U.S. citizen, was scheduled to speak Tuesday at a luncheon hosted by the Toronto-based organization RamsayTalks.

The two-hour event was slated to include a presentation and question-and-answer session on "what we can do about the appalling turn of events in Washington – so that we don’t all end up sacrificing everything," according to the organizer.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Khan said he was not told why his travel privileges were under review.

"This turn of events is not just of deep concern to me but to all my fellow Americans who cherish our freedom to travel abroad," he said, according to the statement. "I have not been given any reason as to why. I am grateful for your support and look forward to visiting Toronto in the near future."

Trump Tells Planned Parenthood Its Funding Can Stay if Abortion Goes

Another thing I think some in the UK don't get is just how deep and wide opposition to abortion is in some quarters in the US. I've read interviews with some who voted for him because he would ban it, either through federal law (easy peasy to get through a GOP congress, then he'd put his paw print on it) or appointing an anti-abortion Supreme court justice so Roe v Wade is overturned.

You have some people who are anti-choice in Britain, but nothing on this order. If you've talked with people in Northern Ireland about the rights and wrongs of abortion, you might have an inkling of what it's like.

I think PP has already said that they aren't going to drop abortion services. They believe the whole spectrum of health services should be offered because providing the full spectrum is what is needed by their clients. Leaving out that coverage would damage their patients.
