The stupidity of the anti-vaxx nutcases

Without knowing whether he is actually mentally unwell or not, does being mentally unwell get a free card from criticism for nasty behaviours?

He was obviously in the throes of a psychotic episode. Denying that would just show a person to be arguing in bad faith. And yes, severe mental illness does get you a free pass on certain actions. Especially as it seems he mostly just harmed himself.

i was one of the ones who laughed and it's a fair criticism from itwillneverwork

however, you extend compassion and understanding to this chap, rightly so.

perhaps extend to why some people might find this funny? maybe covid has put them through hell and they are letting off steam, laughing at people who haven't given a shit since the start.

but yes ultimately you're right, it's not really funny. he's someone's son etc.

Thank you for the reply. I do understand that people have had it hard, and if I haven't been clear enough in my condemnation of those protesters that disrupt medical facilities etc, then I apologise. Those people should face harsh prison sentences, no doubt about that

Lol @ Djokovic deported from Australia for his wild medical exemption bullshit. Oops!!

On a serious note.. who else has seen in the Netherlands they now have a phoneline for covid vax hesistant or even sceptical people. Such a good idea! I think more should be done to engage gently with people on an individual level and not write people off.

I hadn't seen that. I've argued for engaging with people from the start, but one weakness of this that immediately occurs to me is loons calling on mass just to jam it up, and also that one of them might know how to use auto-dialling software.

Anna de Buisseret has been brought up before. Here she is arguing that a case (subsequently overturned) about consent for specific treatment also extends to Covid vaccinations, somehow.

This just proves that these people are living in a total alternate universe. Do they not realise that all these institutions - the police, magistrates, courts etc. are instruments of the state? Whose sole function is to maintain that state?

What do they expect? A sudden upheaval in society, the police and courts arresting and sentencing politicians because Anna is down the road waving papers in the air saying all this is illegal? Fucking clowns.

Well gentlegreen has been doing his best!

I'll translate:
Would you agree that the grifters who make a shit ton of money pushing up the lies that lead to this person setting themselves on fire should be hunted down and shot (or tortured viciously for a very long time as my preferred option)?
If you mean that, you’re a monster

I largely agree with you about that person that set themselves on fire. It's sad more than anything. No idea if he was suffering from a mental health illness, but I think you're likely right that he probably was, or at least vulnerable and taken advantage of by more together anti-vaxxers (hence some of my hatred for the more calculating ones who I think are often exploiters of the vulnerable). But I also think you're rushing to judge many on here too quickly, it's possible to get a laugh from things like that when the internet provides distance and be compassionate in reality ItWillNeverWork.

I mean, we've got multiple belief systems on this planet that can influence entire populations of people into trying to talk a supposedly omnipotent and omniscient entity into interceding for them (which is contradictory, surely such a being would already know what they want?). This behaviour persists in spite of a continual lack of any evidence whatsoever.

So no, it's not "obvious" that people doing things contrary to sensibility are automatically mentally ill. Unless you want to argue that religious believers - still a majority of the world's population - are all mentally ill.

There's nothing wrong with what he and others have pointed out on this thread and a very odd hill to pick by others defending it.

You don't need to be a shrink to make an assumption that all was not well with the mental state of the dead anti vaxxer. So asking for professional credentials is a bit over defensive. On this occasion ItWillNeverWork is probably right that the dead guy was poorly, and a likely victim of the whole anti vax grift. That said, people’s schadenfreude and finding this funny is also understandable.
