The (Real) Ale at Home Thread

Morrisons in Camberwell are doing Jennings lakeland Bitter (3.5%) for £1 a bottle. Never had it before but it's perfectly drinkable.

4 pack of Abbot (500ml - 5%) £4.75 in Morrisons. Not on offer, just thought it was fairly reasonable.

Turned out it was, as it came up £5.75 on the till when scanned. They reduced it for me.

It's almost cheaper to drink it in fucking wetherspoons.

Morrisons remains the king of cheap ale ime.

Even sainsburys own brand cans were over 4 quid for 4 last time I looked.

'cheap'

They rarely do their 500ml bottles for a quid anymore unless it's piss (less than 4% usually). £1.50 is their reduced price these days. And it's, what, 4 bottles for a fiver?

Can still get 6 cans for a fiver in the corner shop near where I live.

Anyone tried the new ones that the Newcastle Brown people are doing at the moment?-

There was another one in there too but I can't remember what it was.

The Winter one is 5.2%. :)

Note the smaller sized bottles.

I'd say go ahead and try them for novelty value. But they're smaller and more expensive so unless you really like them I expect that'll be it.

Found a shop that does 8.5% Orangeboom. Never seen that before.

I don't live near that shop anymore. The only shop nearby now is a Tesco Metro and their booze 'deals' are a fucking pisstake.

Round here I can get this, which is among the finest beers known

It's getting on for £ 2 a bottle, and rarely included in the special offers - although it's more if you buy it by the dozen direct from the brewery - :hmm:

morrisons are good for special offers, but you have to be bloody careful they don't put one item that's not included in the special offer in the middle of the shelf with the special offer labelling. Once might be a mistake, twice might be lack of care, but if the buggers do that to me again, I'm shopping them to trading standards...

You're joking - That's the street drinker's top choice round here at a pound a go. I like these though

Zubr.jpg You can't whack a can that's got a depiction of a wild boar on it.

used to be quite good (and the stuff you got here was made in Holland, not the usual 'brewed under licence in the UK' shite lager)

but never met the 8.5% version.

At the moment my preferred Sainsbury's offering is Thwaite's Wainwright

I'm a bit annoyed they stock Old Thumper and 49er, but not Ringwood Best which is my all-time favourite beer.

That 8.5% Orangeboom is £1.79 where I live. I still buy it now and again though.

I'm not a massive fan of that Zubr. I reckon Debowe Mocne is much tastier, and it's a bit stronger at 7%. Found a place near work that does it for a pound a can so planning on getting a crate in before Christmas if I can.

Bumping this as the most relevant thread to post this. Just tried Cerealist Manifesto at my local. It’s a deliciously tasting stout (I don’t even like stout!). It’s fucking pricey though but given it’s 9% it isn’t really when comparing with wine - and tastes fantastic compared with wine. Fully recommend it. Anyone have their own recommendations?

There are quite a few "Imperial" stouts being brewed at the moment, ranging between 6-12%, from old revived recipes like Courage Imperial Russian Stout, to new brews like Bartrams' Comrade Bill Bartrams Egalitarian Anti Imperialist Soviet Stout, both of which are nice, but the Courage has the traditional bitter-ish bite at the back, whereas the Soviet Stout is smoother (yep, I've tried both).

In terms of other types, I've found myself drinking Fraoch Heather Ale (a "Golden Ale") in preference to lager (I usually like Budvar) in hot weather. It's as smooth as a good Pilsener, but with a different hoppy bite.

If you like the Fraoch Heather Ale note every (English as well as Scottish) Aldi normally gets a bunch in just before Burns Night at around £1.20 a bottle. I always pick up a mini pallet. :)

I’ve just had a Green King East Coast IPA which despite silly branding went down very well. About to crack open an ‘old hoppy hen’ (Morlands)
