The (Real) Ale at Home Thread

Morrisons are doing-

Piddle in the Hole (Wyre Piddle Brewery) at £1.05 for a 500ml bottle. Quite weak though, at 3.6%.

Banks's Bitter at £1 for a 500ml bottle. Again not the strongest, about 3.8% I think.

Both very drinkable though.

What you got? :)

it is all like £2 a bottle in any of my local shops unfortunately. i feel like i deserve to be in an actual pub for that much.
Do any supermarkets do the big 2/3 litre plastic bottles of "bitter" you used to be able to get?

oh yeah i know that one.
what i really want is 3 litre plastic bottle of ale that just says "bitter" on the label, for about £1.50, that you have at picnics and it goes warm and frothy in the sun. all the supermarkets seem to have stopped doing them,.

£1.75 is the standard price in Morrisons and it's a fucking rip off. Ale must be fashionable these days, or something.

If you can get some Debowe Mocne from your local shop then it's well worth it. £1 a tin round my way for a mighty 7% abv. Looks like this- http://2pack.pl/debowe-mocne-w-nowej-szacie

3 for a fiver in Sainsbury's

I've stopped drinking ale at home recently, mainly because of the cost, but I'm hooked on those Redds Polish fruity beers, the orange one is my favourite.

Debowe is now known as 'Polish Special Brew' in our house. I had one can at about 6pm last night and had to go to bed after it

You'll be asking for one of these next

I'm on a Belgian tip at the moment. Ordered a load of 'artisan' ones off the net at great expense, but, actually, Leffe kinda does the job at half the price.

I'm lucky enough to have a gf who works for Marstons/Banks's, and with her discount from the brewery shop it's a quid a bottle for loads of Banks's, Brakspear, Wytchwood and Jennings ales. Occasionally she'll get even more bargains

You jammy sod, steev! Very civilised.

I'm on the Hobgoblin at the moment. £1.99 a bottle isn't too bad for round here. When they run out, it'll be Bombardier, which is still good even though they've cut the ABV.

Might get a case of Belgians in again soon, now you mention it, CF. We had 10 days in Bussels and Bruges this summer and I discovered a whole new world of drinking. I was rather taken with the Affligem (which I oh-so-cleverly call Affliction ) and the Brugse Zot (Bruges Fool). The Grimbergen knocked me on my arse. Just wonderful

And yes, I remember doing my trainee drinking with those 2-litre plastic bottles of Ruddles. Didn't Webster's Yorskhire Bitter come in those bottles too? Not seen them in ages. Happy memories of Oakwood tube car park... :D

It definately is one of the best work perks... and I don't even have to do any of the work :D

I get both of those for a quid
I am quite partial to a bottle or three of hobgoblin, but I've never really enjoyed a good draught pint of it. I'm not sure whether I just don't like it on draught (seems a lot creamier and heavier) or whether I'm yet to have a good pint. On draught it reminds me of the Firkin's Dogbolter which I used to drink years ago and is probably one of the main reasons why I didn't really drink ales for years and became more of a lager and cider drinker for a while. :)

They've got some funny Halloween Hobgoblin stuff called Warlock's Broth or Wizard's Sleeve or something on 8 for £8 in Lidl at the moment. I generally find Hobgoblin a bit too 'tasty' for me though, I prefer a lighter ale.

I generally go for Oxford Gold at the moment if I'm drinking at home, or Enville if I'm at the pub. I was drinking Pedigree Vsop over the weekend and at 6.7% it was suprisingly drinkable :)

To be honest mate, I can't see how 4 for a fiver is a good deal, really.
£1.25 a bottle for Golden Champion is decent value in my eyes.

I get carried away in there tho', I get myself the 4 Champion then bought 5 or 6 of the other ones to try, but Champion is my fav'.

How strong is Golden Champion?

As mentioned before I can get Debowe Mocne for a quid a can, no need for pissy lager. I want to pay circa £1 for decent ale too.

Champions is only about 5% but it's lovely.

I like that Mocne too, some of those Polish lagers are very tasty, but Champion is the business IMO.

Yeah, it was a trip to Bruges that set me off. Brugse Zot, St Feullien, Grimbergen, Guillotine, Trippel Staminee - all incredibly tasty. Like a whole different drink from the lager/blonde beer we get over here.

Bruges nearly killed me. I had to vom in the middle of a busy street the day after the night before on belgian lagers

Yeah, they're not subtle. We had a couple of glasses of Trippel Staminee and were hammered. Didn't realise it was 13.5%. Lovely stuff though. All served with cheese, salami and mustard. Get in.
