The Generic Tennis Thread

It's a sorry state of affairs. Especially when the BIG Three finally zip away their Racquets. I don't think the F N J accomplishments will ever be repeated... FIFTY FIVE MAJORS between 3 players is astonishing.

And counting.. What will be the total? 60—65?!

Andy Murray has just levelled the European Open final against European Open ATP final against Stan Wawrinka if anyone's interested. He was a set and a break down but it's now one set all.

It's on this link but you'll probably need a non-UK VPN to get it: LiveTV / WebPlayer

Blimey! Murray's won. 3-6 6-4 6-4. Must be his first tour title for a couple of years. Typical Murray, running down everything no matter how lost the cause.

Anyone watching the ATP finals? The first (slightly delayed) semifinal is on BBC shortly.

Must admit I switched on to watch Federer and Tsitsipas, not yet another clip of Andy Murray being asked if he'd wanted a boy or another girl. :D

It's been a good tournament so far - better than last year's. Nadal v Tsitsipas and v Medvedev were both well exciting.

You'd think with the amount of money the Beeb will be paying Sue Barker she'd learn to pronounce Tsitsipas's name reasonably correctly and not as Titsy Pas.

I was trying to say it yesterday and must admit I failed miserably.

Nadal must be knackered though! He beat Dan Evans easily but must have had less than half an hour before the next game...

That bloody Rafa  :(

7-6, 7-6  Particularly in that second set I thought GB deserved to take it.

Bit dodgy it's in Madrid again next year too; Spain get home advantage again? :hmm:

Me dad was generous with our Xmas present this year and we happen to be in Auckland on an appropriate day. So we’ve just booked a session at the ASB women’s week tournament. With a bit of luck we’ll see Serena, or Wozniacki, Ostapenko :)

Our matches for tomorrow have been announced.
Amanda Anisimova v Daria Kasatkina in the R16 singles

and one or two doubles. if everything else runs very late we’ll get
Arina Rodionova & Jessica Moore against Cori Gauffe & Catherine Mcnally
But definitely Serena Williams & Caroline Wozniacki against (number one seeds) Caroline Dolehide & Johanna Larsson

which looks okay.

Not the greatest couple of matches ever played (almost as if it were the beginning of the season in a fairly minor tournament) but a good evenings entertainment and I got to see Serena Williams being quite awesome in the second set. Larsson has a damned good serve too.

Reports of players withdrawing from Australian Open due to poor quality of air. Shouldn't they cancel the tournament if it's that bad? Players should withdraw in protest.

The Australian tennis establishment seem implicitly to be taking the view that there's too much riding on it to cancel/rearrange.

But yeah - article on the BBC website today about a player retiring due to the air quality because she was afraid to carry on, others seem to have struggled.

Good wins for Kyrgios & Halep so far, Brits performing to their usual standard.

And I just heard I got two tickets for Court 1 on the second Monday at Wimbledon :)

Good match this. Djokovic moaning about time violations. it's because of his and Nadal's pisstaking that there's a serve clock in the first place.

Massive shame tbh, whatever you think of the decision to do it. Croatia has been very lightly hit and was hoping to have some kind of a tourist season this year. This will be a blow to that. Also, they played tennis but then socialised in nightclubs afterwards. Which of those was ultimately the problem - probably mostly or even entirely the latter, but we can't know.

Holding localised (i.e. national) exhibitions with social distancing, no crowd, no ballkids etc. etc. and regular testing seems like the way to go ATM - it's the only way to get players match-fit before the season resumes.

However, the Adria tour has been a health & PR disaster due to none of the above applying. It is a shame - didn't watch live it due to lack of pay TV but with the above restrictions applied it could have been a great tournament.

I've been watching some of the Battle of the Brits tour today and the contrast with the Adria tour is dramatic. I've only seen photos from the Adria tour but the Battle of the Brits is behind closed doors with good social distancing. It's true there's very little "atmosphere" but having watched lots of Challenger tournaments the lack of crowd noise isn't something that detracts too much from my enjoyment. There's still the skill of the players on view.

I hope the Battle of the Brits and similar tournaments are successful in the short-term and keep the players and all those involved safe.

The annoying thing, thinking about the longer term, is that something further along the scale from 'bubble'-style events like that or the snooker at the moment will be needed. Problem is that the Adria tour tried to go right across to the 'totally back to normal' side of the scale straight away. It doesn't tell us much really about what might be possible cos it was so stupidly conceived.

I hadn't realised how deeply Djokovic is immersed in far out quackery.

After all, it was in his own book, Serve to Win, that he detailed the moment his transformative gluten-free diet began in 2010, when he self-diagnosed a celiac allergy by pressing a slice of bread against his abdomen. From the tyranny of multi-grains, his beliefs span into the realms of telepathy and telekinesis, levitation and a “higher source”. Only recently, on an Instagram Live chat with Chervin Jafarieh, founder of Cymbiotika, a wellness brand selling non-FDA approved potions for £30-a-pop, Djokovic claimed the “power of prayer” could purify polluted water and that sour dinner conversation threatens to strip foods of their nutrients.
His wife is also a 5g and steiner school loon.

More n more reasons to want Djokovic to lose. Amazing lead taken by Evans, not gonna last long though

That other British again fella did alright yesterday as well.
