Medvedev's sideways fall at the end was hilarious. My OH reckoned it was worthy of John Cleese.

He's not your archetypal sports hero. I enjoyed that too. It was like he realised, oh I have to do something 'cool' now like everyone else does when they win something.

Ok. So did I just hear correctly? The 'Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion' from JP Morgan has just presented a cheque to the men's winner for $2.5m. Which is I think twice what Raducanu got? :D

That then, is good. I seem to recall quite a battle over equality in prize money years ago, I take it that's been resolved?

Remarkable playing from medvedev - keeping Novak from officially claiming the men's All time Slam Winner's Crown. Well done sir, well done.
What a pity for Djokovic. Oh well, never mind.

More crucially he missed out on the calendar grand slam, which he actually claimed mattered more to him (probably because it would always be far harder to achieve if he didn’t win this tournament) than getting to 21 slams, which he’ll most probably do before he retires.

The women's Indian Wells final is proving a corker. Now in the deciding set.

While I'd like to see Azarenka win, Badosa has been involved in two of the most exciting matches I've seen this year.

Just got back to see the last set, which is nice. Tie breaks straight away in the final set always seem wrong

This is funny as fuck. Will Djokovic stick to his idiotic nutjob beliefs, or bite the bullet in his bid to become the GOAT? Win-win situation for me anyway :D

It will be interesting.

AFAIK there's been speculation that he is actually vaxxed (as he attended some event where you had to be).

He'll play there come what may.

Just watching him right now... was struggling against Zverev but now looking to win the second set!

It will be interesting to see what sort of, er, reaction the Aussie crowds give him...
Heard an Aus journo on 5Live suggesting a lot of the crowd will (understandably) not be happy about this...

I mean, he's the nine-time champ, defending champ, and he's looking to break the all-time record, so it was kind of inevitable, but still disappointing all the same.

Applications for medical exemptions were assessed anonymously by two separate panels, with inflammatory cardiac illness or another acute condition listed as valid reasons, or evidence of a recent Covid infection.

That one's weird, because sure, apparently it means your vaccination needs to be postponed, but that still means you're currently unvaccinated  I've heard anecdotal suggestion that you're "immune" or "can't carry it" after you've just had it, but not from medical professionals.

Anyway, presumably Djoko was able to produce, through whatever means, acceptable evidence.

The biggest prick in world politics vs the biggest prick in world sport. This is gonna be fun.

He's destroyed his legacy here. He was always a bit iffy anyway. I think this is it.

The whole situation with Djokovic leads to two interesting questions:

  • why were players who were vaccinated with certain vaccines (Sputnik etc?) not allowed to play? They must be fuming!
  • what if the other Slams, and other tournaments, follow suit? This raises questions not just for Djokovic but for others, e.g. Sandgren and Herbert have openly opted out of the Australian Open due to not being vaxxed.

We'll see how it goes but I doubt this will happen at any other slams. The picture might be very different come our summer.

Agree with your first point, though. I didn't know they'd refused certain vaccines. That's not on. I think Djokovic is a complete arse over this, and so are the others refusing to get vaxxed, but the Aus government is also being an arse. Arses all round.

World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic has been denied entry to Australia over an issue with his visa.

He will be flown out of the country later on Thursday but his lawyers will challenge the decision, Australian media report.

Crikey and strewth!
