The Generic Tennis Thread

Presumably he doesn’t now have time to go through an appeals process and still make the start of the tournament, so he may as well skulk off home.

Lying on your visa application doesn’t tend to go down well.

He’ll get an expedited appeal but they look to have a pretty good car this time.
What did he lie about? That can be proven, at least.

I assumed if a judge let him in, that suggested his visa was legally sound?

He's admitted what he said about not travelling was inaccurate (he went to Spain in the preceding 14 days), albeit he's blaming a flunky. But I doubt a judge would have much sympathy for that defence.

Ah, ok, wasn't even aware of that part of the whole thing.

Views on the vaccine aside, you'd think he'd still try and be on the right side of the "not vaccinated" rules! Like, "ok, I don't want to get the vaccine, so what do I have to do instead?".

The immigration minister can (and has) revoke the visa on the grounds that he's a demonstrable threat to the wellbeing of Australia on Covid grounds.

There's the clear and obvious error on his visa application about not travelling in the previous 14 days (flunky error or not, that's a biggie) and Djokovic himself has admitted to breaking quarantine following his positive test in order to fulfil an interview obligation with L'Equipe magazine. Practically and morally that gives Aus the right to say "you know what, I don't think you take Covid seriously enough in comparison with what Australians have been obligated to go through this past 21 months. Fuck off."

Legally speaking, not so clear cut. I think they want to tie him up in appeals so that he misses the 1st round and skulks home of his own accord, and I hope they manage it.

Tsitsipas putting the boot in.

"He has been playing by his own rules," Tsitsipas said to Indian outlet WION. "No-one would have thought: 'I can come to Australia unvaccinated and not have to follow the protocols they gave me'.

"Putting a Grand Slam at risk - I don't think many players would do that."

Appeal set for 8.45pm. Not sure if that means in 15 minutes or twelve hours… we’ll find out soon enough though

So, it seems the essence of his case is that the minister decided to revoke his visa (at least in part) because he is a rallying point for the anti-vax movement (which, in turn, is a threat to public health), but that such a position is irrational, as the minister failed to consider that revoking the visa would increase anti-vax sentiment.

It really is mystifying why so many people think he's an arrogant wanker isn't it? Why do people always want his opponent to win whenever he plays?

What Andy Murray's doing is kind of incredible... I watched the documentary 'Resurfacing' last year, about his injury woes.. and to come back, compete and win at elite level... Just hope he's not doing more long-term damage to the hip..

Pleased the Murray won , whatever happens in the his next match (he's playing a qualifier) his ranking will improve (maybe top 100) . And it's remarkable that he has come back to approaching his previous levels.

Also pleased that Radacanu won , her freak US Open win might have derailed her subsequent career but she had a decent win against a quality player (also a US Open winner) .

Plus , Murray has got further in the Australian Open than his Australian Open nemesis, Novax, who beat him 4 times in Australian Open finals.

Just watched the first set tiebreak between Nadal and Mannarino earlier today. 16-14 at the end, and with some bonkers points to boot :)

He may not be that likeable (although he doesn't care if he's liked, which itself is kind of likeable), but Medvedev is the real deal, isn't he. He could dominate the next few years.
