The Generic Tennis Thread

If Djoko gets an early break, I’m off.

I’m not sure what I think about medvedev. Obvs against the cheese thief, I’ll want him. And I should like him cos he’s a bit of an oddballl. But I just don’t warm to him especially
'Cheese thief'? You'll have to explain that one!

I think this is going to be yet another case of Djoko dropping the first set, only to cruise to a relatively easy win after that. Wonder if it's a tactical thing.

Not technically a thief, but monopolising the world supply is just as evil. And he never opened that restaurant.

There was a quote (from St Andy, I think) the other night: “first he breaks your legs, then he breaks your soul”. His opponent knackers them self out winning the first set, then gets crushed coming so close but not quite in the next two. Then he’s dead in the fourth.

I am being impressed by the cheese thief’s serve and volley tonight tho. Not what I would expect and brilliantly done.

Whoever wins this third set is crucial.

 at the donkey cheese story - that's real 'lost in showbiz' stuff!

Feel myself rooting for Zverev - not due to having read the donkey cheese story, not quite sure why - just an instinct to support the underdog even though Zverev may or may not be quite an unsavoury character.

Unsavoury and donkey cheese - am I missing a clever pun?

why is he unsavoury? He was nicer than tsitsipas over towel nonsense.

I may just have woken mrsb up applauding

Ex-girlfriend making DV allegations. I don't know enough about it to comment. I disliked Zverev at first, then warmed to him a bit at the ATP Finals where he beat Federer and there was all that furore, and have now gone off him again.

He's a great player though.

Oh god. Just half read the slate story on it. That gas rather taken the shine off any potential win. Proper control and coerce shit. On top of the physical violence.

It's a fantastic match. Dkoko looking like edging it. That career year grand slam is in his sight!

...and out of nowhere came two little Canadians.

“It’s a great for Canada. It’s great for Quebec. We’re both born in Montreal. I mean, I never thought a day like this would come. Both a little girl and a little boy from Montreal, both at the same time in the semi-finals of the US Open. It’s special for us. I hope the people back home appreciate the moment also. We do a lot.“

Fernandez was asked what the secret to Canada’s success was in her post-match interview. Without hesitation the 19-year-old let the world know it was our superior maple syrup.

“I would say it’s the maple syrup,” the Montreal tennis pro joked. “Canadian maple syrup is very good.”

She'll be a very tough opponent indeed for our girl Emma Raducanu.

Sorry to see Felix Auger-Alliassime go out but he has a very bright future IMHO.

ETA - Canadian tennis is in good hands - Shapovalov is also a very promising contender.

That similie tho

"Leylah Fernandez's mum is the coolest customer...but I bet she's like a swan, er...flapping under the water"

Mrs SI just pointed out that neither girl was born when the event they just commemorated before the match.
Aye, hadn't quite occurred to me but they mentioned it just before the match. Do wonder quite what it means to people who don't remember it (which'll obviously vary wildly from person to person).
