The Generic Tennis Thread

I saw a little last night, so you inspired me to watch from the beginning. An hour and a half ago.

Just finished the fifth game in set 2, the twenty minute one. Wow.
I tuned in when I saw Djokovic was 6-1 down and thought it might get exciting...and it did!

It would be surprising if Brooksby, Raducanu, Alcaraz & Fernandez didn't all end up huge stars - they've really come through at this tournament.

Raducanu doing significantly less well so far today. She'd won by this time yesterday, but she's only a set and a break up at the moment.

I suppose beating the Olympic champion in straights sets will have to do, even if she looked right dodgy in that last game. That she won anyway.

I just watched the end of the match. I'd seen Djok go 4-0 up in the 3rd live and went to bed thinking its all over. But even tho Brooksby didn't really have a chance, almost every game was brilliant. Really clever variation and movement, great physicality and just never say die, motherfucker. He looks like a white male middle class all american athlete. I should hate him, bit I really dont.

Sakkari looking good right now.

Whoever wins will be a tough opponent for Emma.

Trying to decide whether to stay up to see Djokovic v Berrettini. Predictably I predict an easy win for Djoko!

What I don't want is to get absolutely sucked into it, it goes to five sets and I end up going to bed at silly o'clock (and getting up at silly o'clock!).

Yes, Brooksby was fantastic, and the scoreline doesn't do him justice.

Sakkari it is. The most aggressive opponent ER will have face, from what I have seen. Should be a fascinating match up. The interview with MS was pretty disgraceful, a couple of brief questions about her and her match, then moving quickly onto how great teenagers and ND are doing.

I am not going to stay up for the next match, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not.

I might.

The musculature on Maria Sakkari is something to behold! Yes, a fascinating match up and a very tough one. 01.30am tomorrow.

I might will stay up. Will try and force myself to bed if Djoko is blatantly eviscerating Berrettini.

Mt favourite moment(s) from last night, other than the actual tennis - the camera cut to this bloke looking surprised at one point. A bit later it cut to him picking up a loose ball and the commentator mentioned 'it's him again'. Then there was another brief shot later, for no good reason, and the commentator went 'oh, this guy's still there.'

Completely oblivious to the fact that said bloke was Lin-Manuel Miranda.

I had to google Lin-Manuel Miranda!

Well I'm tuned in to the match now so no hope of getting to bed at a non-stupid hour...

there is the horrible tug between needing to go to bed at a sane hour and knowng that will only be possible if djok is winning 6-2 3-0 in the next 50 minutes

Nearly every game so far has gone to deuce.

I will not stay up till 5am.

I think we're still on the same game [It's a fifth deuce at 3-2 & ten minutes later than the above post] to anyone reading tomorrow]. I suspect if I stay up till the end, mrsb will have got up to go to work. I cant let that happen, or I wont see the finals because I'll be dead.

Unfortunately :D it's a really exciting game so far. Berrettini a lot better than I expected, with the crowd on his side.

Two minutes to five and I am still watching Djokottini!

Cannot see a way back in for Berrettini. His level has dropped since the first set. Is losing the first set a tactical thing for Djokovic, I wonder?

I smell a three-setter ahoy.

Which means the Raducanu game (which I MUST see) won't get started until about 2.15.

2.15, you optimistic devil. Good match, too many errors to be really great, but a good watch and great result.

I hope this no longer holds true
Indeed - going well so far.

My OH decided he wouldn't stay up for it and would 'do a Likely Lads'* and watch it tomorrow. Whatever the result, he's going to have a hard time not knowing!

*in reference to the legendary 70s sitcom whereby Bob and Terry attempt to watch an England game after the event, without knowing the result...

that was my plan, but there is no way i could avoid hearing, or more likely reading, about it before i get to a tv

Just incredible - not only Emma but Fernandez, too.

Fernandez will be a very, very tough opponent.

Well my OH managed to watch it this morning without knowing the result beforehand. Didn't turn his phone on until afterwards.

Can't wait until the final. It's going to be bonanza time for Amazon - imagine the free trials!

I know the women's is so much more wide open than the men's, but this is a whole new level.

Aah, fuck. I really, really wasn’t going to watch tonight. But djoko has just lost the first set. I’m gonna have to stay up for at least four more games

Never seen Zverev play this well.

Not sure who I want to win. Gave up on the Medvedev v Auger-Alliasime game earlier as it was pretty one-sided and I'm a bit tennis-ed out. Two players I like. Not keen on either Djoko or Zverev.

Really want Medvedev to win this now.

ETA still think Djoko will win this match tonight. Staying up. :D

If Djoko gets an early break, I’m off.

I’m not sure what I think about medvedev. Obvs against the cheese thief, I’ll want him. And I should like him cos he’s a bit of an oddballl. But I just don’t warm to him especially
