The end of cash?

You could also (pre-Oyster) buy books of coupons for cashless journeys.
reminds me of those phone cards they used to sell for the new fangled phone boxes, so you didn't have to pump coins in, I don't remember ever buying them - just used coins until I got a mobile in 1999 I think

BT Chargecard! They were great. You could also use them to call from a mate’s phone and charge it to the card.

this innovation of having the order number sent directly to staff in kitchen has probably been implemented elsewhere tbf
I think kfc and burger king also have them but i don't think they are commen outside of the big fast food chains in the uk.

I was referring to the phone cards that BT used to do? Pre-paid ones ?

Yeah, they're BT phonecards. Chargecards looked like this below, and what you did was dial 144, and then at the prompt enter the number on the card and then a PIN. Then it would let you call anywhere and charge the call to a nominated account. It was ideal for using payphones without any cash or using someone else's phone at your own expense.

must admit, I have heard of the charge cards :D

Those kinds of trade are still common in rural areas. If you have guns or ammo to trade, you can get just about anything you need.
Less guns and ammo but otherwise the same over here. Before I moved I had a great little circle of connections I could use to do swaps between each other or for myself - covered loads of different foods, use of land, building materials, firewood, second hand tools...

Yes, you need to know who is in your circle and what they need to make trade work. One thing that helps is local trade forums on Facebook and other platforms.

I'm not on Facebook and I know it would really help when I've only just moved here, but I just can't bring myself to sign up. Getting to know one or two people who know absolutely everyone is my current plan. Luckily the couple who own the farm next door seem to tick that box, as well as being really nice and already helping us out with some stuff (I have a load of spare duck eggs I'm going to use to do some baking for them, to say thanks for letting us put a cow and calf in their byre for a week recently)

You're better off all the way around getting to know your neighbors. I know that's old fashioned, but I've gotten so much help and helped others that way.

Last night I helped a neighbor with their horses. I heard them running around all stirred up. So, about 11:00 pm, I put my pants on and checked on them. I found one had escaped its fencing and the other was upset because it couldn't reach the other horse. I got the neighbor out of bed. We got the loose horse and fixed the fence enough to hold them until morning. I finally got back to bed about midnight. And people think its dull in the countryside.

I was out leg ringing our chickens last night because next door's keep moving in here :D

This! None of us have advocated cash-only, as implied by some posters on this thread. Just highlighted why cash is still important.
Cash is very important but I'm a hypocrite and can't remember last time I used cash. All besides it is possible they will get rid of cash eventually and the central digital currency looks very dodgy.

Which parts are real and which are conspiracy 🤔
I know Maajid has said lots of dodgy things in past but is this fear mongering or could this actually happen.
