The situation is even worse than that though, not only are the populist right doing exactly what they need to be doing on messaging, their opponents are doing the exact opposite.

The left to an extent, and liberals to now a far greater extent, has gotten caught up in rhetoric and ideological feedback loops which are openly contemptuous of the people they need to win over. Any contact with left spaces, both online and in the real world, is immediately alienating for people not already inducted into, and willing to accept, various beliefs which run counter to what most people believe. Worse than that, even if they are willing to accept all of those beliefs, if they are a particular identity then essentialist logic dictates that their very presence is unwelcome. The presence of these people is of course necessary for these groups to win power.

Take Clinton campaign surrogate Lena Dunham's posting of a video (still online) calling, features the voices of her and her unbearably annoying father, for the end of white men just a couple of days before the US election. Also, for a less extreme but still stupid example think of Clinton's deporable speech.



It's not confined to the US either, obviously.

What is it that makes these people so bad at messaging that they are tactically far more inept than far-right twitter trolls?

In my humble opinion, you don't solve racism by adding yet more racism, nor sexism with different sexism. I'd have thought the whole idea was to get away from that sort of thing. I mean at the end of the day what's so wrong with racism and sexism anyway- is it because those things are an affront to the human condition? That's what I thought the problem was. At some point one realises that one exists, was born, is something called "a boy" or "a girl" and "a muslim" and "Chinese"... and are slotted into whatever space the world up to that point has made for one. Then, whoever you are, you basically just get on with it using your "free will" as much as possible. Telling anyone that their existence is some sort of fundamental error just isn't the way forward imo. I mean... "I just work here man, this is the outfit I was given to wear when I woke up on this planet, now you're telling me I gotta pay a fine?" There's got to be a better message than that, something that's pro solidarity or something, more "Team Human" than "Yooz lot can just Fuck Off!" or whatever. Please excuse my foolish notions.

there tends to be a very one-sided, po-faced collective opinion on Urban about characters like him: very suspicious, easily offended, gunning for his (metaphorical) blood , baffled by satire- which is all oh so very very predictable.
