Spurs 2023/24

Playing weekly with a reasonably settled first team and lots of time for training is why we are punching so hard above our weight this year, though.
It's also the reason why I expect us to fall away at some point. In years with cup runs and Europe (60+ matches) we've had players run into the ground; obviously that doesn't apply this year (about 46 matches max depending on FA Cup), but injuries and suspensions will still happen and the more that 11 has played the more undercooked the replacements will be.

Sir Alex Ferguson in the Ronaldo-Tevez-Rooney era won a league title where not one single player played 4 consecutive full 90 minute matches. I reckon most football watchers at the time could have (mostly) agreed on what "the first XI" was, but it would have been vanishingly rare to have them all on the pitch at the same time. That's why his Utd teams would so often go on title winning runs in the latter stages when others (Keegan's Newcastle for instance) would falter.

It's very much a squad game nowadays. I think we've got a terrific first 11 and a decent handful of very good players outside it, but it requires very careful management to not draw a distinct line between the 2 sets. We finished the Fulham match with Hojbjerg-Skipp-Lo Celso in midfield (none of them first choice) and lost a bit of control - sometimes there might be a case for starting 1 of them, so that at least one of the "first choice" can get an occasional rest and/or be subbed on to finish the game with a bit more quality.

The thing is that the Biss-Madds-Sarr midfield, which has been so exciting so far, isn’t even likely to be the first choice when Bentacur is back. Hojbjodge is great for calming things down when we have lost interest in goals, Lo Celso seems to do an okay Maddison impression if needed, and I think that’s the midfield six for the kind of rotation you describe - Skipp probably needs a loan with an option to buy,

I think Hojbjerg is more likely than Skipp to leave - he's of an age and too good to not play week in week out, but Bissouma is just more suited to the role in that he's better at the defence to attack transitional side of things (the Dembele style glide past a pressing midfielder and 40 yards up the pitch in the blink of an eye). Skipp is excellent defensively, so could be used either alongside Bissouma (the Sarr role) or as a more orthodox midfield anchor - I still think he's got a big future, he's just maybe not the present as things stand.

Clear handball, with devastating consequences for our goal difference. We should demand a replay.

Anyway, good subs after a woeful first half. Time for Davies to be sent to live on a farm, sadly, but good news that Royal seems so comfortable on the wrong side when needed. Great second goal (Son’s first touch of the game?) that might see Johnson starting on the left next time.

That table is still looking good.

What the actual chuff. Hard fought 2-1 away win at Palace, and 5 POINTS CLEAR AT THE TOP. Yeah we've played the game more, but enjoy it for now - by the end of the weekend another round of matches ticked off and a minimum of 2 points ahead.

I bloody love Big Ange and I bloody love Tottenham Hotspur 💙

I liked Brennan Johnson (and also a lad by the name of Djed Spence) at Forest, chuffed when we signed him. Maybe not a high numbers goalscorer, but pace suits this side and he's got that to burn. Him, Son and Kulu is a quality front 3.

Yes, should be. Not Kulu’s best game today though.

Anyway, Vicario. And VDV. And Cuti. I think it’s the best keeper and CBs combination we’ve ever had. So calm and controlled.

Could go on to be, the start they've made together is outstanding. But for now, for me and my "watching Spurs since 1987" self I'll go with prime Lloris + Vertongheweireld, although Ledley King + any 2 others runs them close.

Hmm. When those two others are probably Woodgate and ButIAmSolCampbell, disqualifications on the grounds of good taste start to apply. And I’d swap the undoubtedly superior passing from Vertsweireld for VDV’s speed, just because it makes such good telly.

For reasons of good taste, I'll go with Robinson & Dawson (05/06 kind of era). I could have said Radek Cerny and Tony Gardner and it would still be a great trio, because Ledley King was really that good.

Yeah, fair enough! Always had a soft spot for Tony Gardner, anyway, it was on one of my relatively rare outings to WHL that he mildly ambled the length of the pitch and scored without being challenged or even really noticed by the opposition, West Ham.

My dad always used to say to look at the table after ten games. Well. You're 5 points clear.

Surely you can't fuck it up from here?

Spurs winning the title the year Kane left would be fucking funny tbf.

Weekly visual table update, after everyone has played 10 games. Taking shape - big gap already between the top 5 and those below, cluttered mini-league between 6-16, and 4 getting cast adrift at the bottom.

Newcastle could still potentially bridge the gap to any of the top 5 who hit a rocky patch, but Man Utd absolutely can't. They were embarrassingly bad today, not in the same league as City, and by the end were mentally shot - Anthony and Bruno Fernandes especially were doing everything they could to get sent off, kicking out and backchatting the ref. Ten Hag has lost the plot, he doesn't seem to have a clue how to set them up and the players are doing nothing to save his job; dead man walking.

Man City won, but other than that a cracking set of results this weekend. Arsenal lost in hilarious circumstances, and Arteta should have a lengthy ban and a huge fine coming his way for his Keegan-esque meltdown questioning the integrity and competence of referees (who for once actually got something right). Liverpool only drew at Luton, Villa lost at Forest. Newcastle and Man Utd the other big movers in the top half, just about hanging onto the leading pack (though Man Utd once again didn't look much to worry about).

Just the small matter of our own game to worry about now, a home game vs bottom half of the table Chelsea. Udogie should be fit, and Bentancur is available again (although probably still a bit soon to start). Assuming Sarr starts ahead of Bentancur, 10 of the 11 picks itself with just a choice between Brennan Johnson and Richarlison on the left.

COYS!

Strong bench btw. Forster, Emerson, Dier, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Lo Celso, Gil, Richarlison.

No sympathy for Maddison after that dive.
Dive? You mean the one where something pinged in his foot/ankle and he went down injured not claiming anything? You're weird.

What a fucking madness of a game. Totally in control for 20 minutes until carnage unleashed.

Var watch...

Son offside goal - good decision, but took ages when it didn't need to. Very tight but clear on first paused image.

Udogie red card - an orange card if ever there was one, two footed but actually relatively controlled. It wasn't a wild one - I'd have had no complaint with a red, neither do I have a problem with yellow and I'd have said the same if it were a Chelsea player.

Romero red card no.1 - good decision, nope. A stupid, petulant kick out but it wasn't violent just as Beckham's wasn't in 98. A yellow would have been justified.

Caicedo offside goal - good decision. Very tight, but offside.

Sterling handball goal - good decision, easy one.

Penalty & red card - good decision, getting the ball means nothing when the follow through is reckless. Curtis Jones' was a red card, so is Romero's and he's been a bit of a dick there.

Reece James red card - he's a bit lucky, but maybe similar to Romero no.1. Petulant and stupid but not meeting the threshold for violent conduct. Good decision.

The VAR crew are having a busy old time of it tonight, but it's actually all working properly so far.

Oh yeah there's also (occasionally) a football match breaking out. Micky VDV desperately unlucky, squad is being stretched tonight and for the forseeable future.
