SNP leadership election (2023)

I’d discounted Yousaf when first trying to think of a successor the day Sturgeon resigned because he hadn’t covered himself in glory in his current position. He has the charisma to speak on TV, but I wasn’t thinking that would be enough. I knew Swinney wouldn’t stand: he’s been there before and it didn’t suit him - he’s too much of a mild mannered bank manager. And I literally couldn’t think of anyone else. I’d never heard of Ash Regan. So I said maybe Forbes, but from a field of none.

The most impressive performer in the SNP is Mhairi Black. She’s an MP (Westminster), though, and so won’t be in the running. Plus I think she’s a bit too much of an outsider.

Black is the only one in my book who can give as good as Sturgeon. She'd be great at the job. As it stands though, the only one who doesn't seem to completely fail at media interviews is Yousaf.

I think this twitter thread is a good representation of the poison and mistrust there is within the SNP and the sheer loathing amongst its opponents presently, largely posted for those who don't know Scots politics very well or read much about it. For context Mhairi Hunter is a pro-Humza cheerleader who was calling for Forbes to withdraw a few days ago after her bigoted religious views became known, because it was "damaging to the party".

The succession to Sturgeon is an absolutely toxic binfire only a week into the process and very clear that whoever wins it will be bitterly opposed by a sizeable minority within the party itself.

The SNP, always a delicate truce between competing and irreconcilable interests, is entering a protracted carrion stage. It still astonishes me that there is absolutely no opposition worthy of the name. If there were the SNP would be falling apart by now. That Scotland will be governed by a crumbling mannequin of a government for at least another few years is in nobody's interests.

Kate Forbes, while her views are reprehensible, appears to have been the most honest of the lot. None of it is very edifying is it :(
Doesn't seem to have done her too much harm either:

The survey of 1,001 people who voted for the party at the last Scottish Parliament election, carried out by communications agency The Big Partnership between Monday and Wednesday, found 28% favoured Ms Forbes as the next leader, against 20% for Mr Yousaf and 7% for Ms Regan. About a third were undecided.

A bit dubious, as 45% is well over a third normally.

Interesting twitter thread on the nature of the electorate that will choose the new SNP leader (in short: standing on a renewed "social conservative" ticket unlikely to win any candidate the vote. Note also dominance of PMC in the membership)

Final context: in the oddball electoral city of Aberdeen Labour triumphed in a local council by-election with the SNP vote 10% down. On STV Labour won a narrow contest on the 8th stage. Sleepy Cuddles party beat the Greens (stony ground for the Greens admittedly).

Thanks for that, not properly sampled but still interesting results - and reinforces the distinction between progressives and socialists

Jesus.
I think Sturgeon (and Salmond before the shit came out and he want down the loon hole) must have given me an image of a far more competent SNP that it really is.
I've heard that exact sentiment from quite a lot of people in the past few days.
