Smug London snob slags off Brighton Pier for its lack of vibrancy

It looks HIDEOUS.

It is. :( There's a café on the ground floor which looks out to sea, but has a low wall which means you can't even see the sea. The vibrant bit is that each floor has 'spaces', basically glass fronted brutalist rooms which they intended to be filled by artists and the like. Most were empty when I went last year. Only redeeming feature is that each floor has a massive photo of Redcar beach through the ages, from Victorian times.

Edit: a proper Redcar helter skelter:
Redcar "vertical pier" of the past on postcard

So you're saying that things need to change because visitor numbers are falling?

Oh, wait...
No, those are your words. Not mine. If visitor numbers have risen that's good for local businesses but it could be as a result of other factors. Maybe there's proven market research that says day trippers would love the seafront and the pier to stay exactly as it is forever. Doubt it, somehow.

There is indeed research which shows that they mainly come for the beach and are pretty much pleased with their overall experience.

The 2014 study I posted earlier contains this:
When asked to specify which attraction(s) they had visited or planned to visit during their trip, overwhelmingly the most popular was the pier (41%). This was followed by the Lanes (12% and Pavilion (9%).

i'd have thought 2013, 2014 the figures would be boosted by the thousands who turned out to oppose the march for england - and the few score sad arses who attended it. Mr.Bishie

The March for England is just another seaside spectacle amongst dozens. Good fun as it is - I doubt it gets the numbers of the Kitesurfing Festival or the London to Brighton egg and spoon race.

I know, I was at the Blackpool one last year and was me who got bashed rather than the fash. :( Anyway, back to piers...

Brighton (since 2012 anyway) has gone a bit better than Blackpool - but this idea that the community spontaneously drapes itself in a rainbow flag and heads out to oppose the fash is a load of romantic bollox. Anyway - as you say, piers.

They do that in bournemouth too I think

Anyway - both Brighton and London are shit, though in different ways.

As you were

Pfff a ‘beach’ with pebbles is no beach. It’s just an edge. Perfect for Brighton edgelords.
Edge? No that would be a cliff; have you never heard of shingle?

As for edgelords, I can only presume you've never been to Woodingdean, Ovingdean, Coldean or Tenantry Down (not exacly over flowing with any sort of edgelordy vibes).

Why not come and dip a toe in the Brighthelmstone waters, it can be fun.

Cheers - Louis MacNeice

Awwww, I like Brighton beach! I spent my childhood in Brighton and it was fine once I got used to the lack of sand (luckily both my grandmas lived near sandy beaches). Love the Palace Pier as well. I went to see Space in Brighton about 8 years ago and went for lunch at the chippy on the pier. Although seeing the skeletal remains of the West Pier makes me feel a bit sad.

Everyone in Brighton says it's the owners of the Palace pier that burnt down the west pier. Is this true? If so it doesn't seem it's a business worthy of anyone's support and should be boycotted.

It has different owners than it did at the time of the West Pier fire.
