Sky's Kay Burley is an embarrassment to journalism

T & P

|-o-| (-o-) |-o-|
Surprised to see there wasn't a thread on this... Sky News' fierce and ruthless anchor, always so keen to savage politicians on-air for any perceived failings or shortcomings, has been told to fuck off for six months after failing herself to comply with Covid regulations

She also tried to minimise the nature of the infraction by initially claiming it was a brief of currew that was the issue; not the afterparty she had back at hers :D

Couldn't happened to a nicer journo.

She's no John Humphrys, though I suspect she likes to see herself as fearsome a journalist. I suspect most people who watch her on Sky News do it out of morbosity, rather than because of her incisive questioning and insight.

This the one that went into a different restaurant to the one she'd been eating at, to use the loo, as the taxi was taking a while to turn up?

Cos I really can't be at all bothered to get remotely angry by that. Shouldn't have done it but meh.

That may be someone else though...

As for KB generally , I can't remember. She's the sadness in their eyes one though right?

Ah, but it wasn't just that. She tried to make that (by all accounts small) breach of Covid the only wrongdowing she'd done. No doubt lack of space on her Twitter account prevented her from owning up to the fact that she then went on to have an afterparty at home with people from three different households. So she broke two sets of Covid rules, and then try to pass the incident off as just being the loo break issue.

She tried to spin it as nipping to the loo, but...

she shouldn’t have been at a meal with anyone outside her household or bubble, there were loads them at the meal, then a number went back to her for the after party. All strictly forbidden under tier two, as she well knew.

A number of other attendees are having their identities hidden though, which seems odd...

Yeah, that was the bit I saw at the weekend. No mention of the 10 people at the restaurant and back to the house then.

Shouldn't have done it but it's not quite Barnard Castle for me.

What kind of punishment is 6 months paid leave though. :D...

Beth Rigby must have been there too as she has been taken off air for three months.
Two of Sky's top reporters off air & they often asked the most searching questions at the briefings.

Barnard Castle only involved one household, this is a lot worst, especially as she was due in a hospital to report on the first person getting the covid vaccine.

Mixes with several different households, potentially getting infected, then off to a hospital to spread it about, brainless twat should be sacked.

I don't give a shit and I'm annoyed by the idea that I should. It's hypocritical celeb culture finger-wagging and it does nothing to improve the world at all.
I certainly agree with you concerning entertainment-type celebrities (singers, actors, entertainment TV presenters etc), but as a news anchor whose job description includes grilling and holding to account politicians for breaches of conduct, I think she deserves more scrutiny about her own behaviour, and due criticism if she breaks the very rules she routinely castigates others for breaking.

I’m not saying she should be hung to dry for it, but the reporting on her Covid rules breach has (so far at least) been justified and proportional imo. It’s also quite enjoyable to watch, because karma is a bitch, and she has unduly unpleasant to interviewees on several occasions.

I cannot blame her employer for making take some time off either. As their longest-serving and best know anchor, she pretty much is the face of Sky News. A number of other companies would have probably fired her on the spot for bringing the company into disrepute.

To be fair I don't watch Sky News so I have no idea whether she's been active in having a go at people for lockdown/regs breaches - if so then sure, there's fun in seeing people's hypocrisy pointed out.

But apart from the fact that all of the reporting on this will have been done by people who either have done the same or worse, or know those who have, it just perpetuates the idea that everything would be fine if it weren't for a few isolated rule-breakers - an individualistic idea that conveniently excuses any problems with the rules themselves, who sets them, how they could ever work, what's been done in the past etc. This is the line that the government has been constantly pushing, "our rules are perfect and it's just bad people who ruin everything", at the same time as they actively refuse to do anything properly, siphon off cash to them and their cronies, and even set laws so they can meet their mates constantly (they're MPs, they don't have mates outside of people they work with). This sort of hypocrisy and incompetence gets a free pass because everything has to be framed around individuals apparently. That's what makes me cross, and I'll be even more cross next election when the exact same happens and the Tories win again.

Until a few months ago she was on mid-afternoons, with a fairly low audience, for some reason they promoted her to breakfast time, forcing me to suffer the fucking crap output from the BBC at that time instead.

She's been there a long time, but she's an annoying windbag, that the channel would be better of without.

The thing is, can you name any other Sky News newsreaders/ anchors? Adam Bolton is the only other Sky News person I can name, and whereas he’s very well-known and respected in the industry, he’s a political editor not a newsreader or everyday anchor.

Burley does seem to have worked at most time slots of the day. It’s perhaps all down to audience share figures, and Sky trying to see in which slot she does best.

Adam Bolton is 'Editor-at-large' & a daily anchor for 'All Out Politics', other anchors I can name are - Niall Paterson, Ian King, Mark Austin, Dermot Murnaghan, Sarah-Jane Mee and Sarah Hewson - all of which I rate higher than Burley.

Not saying what she did was fine but Comings was worse. He was at the centre of government, behind policy making and travelled whilst infected.

 I didn’t realise that she meant to be reporting in the hospital too! How did everyone find out about the after party? Neighbours? That Next Door forum discussed on another thread?

Yep. And she was the one that gave Cummings the most grief in that news press conference.
More shocked by her tbh. We all know Burley's scummy.
