Is that a proper Verpan Fun pendant/chandelier?
Must admit that I've never heard the name, but it's from the 60s/70s. My cousin got it from her parents and she sold it to me for 50€ after she decided to remodel her flat. I now know that they go for around 1000€ after recently googling for mother of pearl discs, because a few are missing.

Reno i love it, the colours, the commitment. Its Capiz shell isnt it not MOP, you should be able to get a few easily even if by canibalising a cheap shade?

Has anyone ever bought some tiles without spending 100 years looking at pictures of tiles on the internet and then getting free samples that are the size of a postage stamp?
Yep. We had to make our tile decisions in one session a couple of weeks ago. Husband hadn’t consulted on timings with builders so all of a sudden we had 36 hours notice that we were visiting a shop and ordering tiles. Husband spent the next day visiting local tile shops and doing a pre select and the next day went and chose them all with the builder. We live in Portugal, really poor online shopping here and no local shops had samples. We ordered a lot of tiles!

Here you go.

Kitchen — these tiles just run as a border in some areas. (There is also some metro tiling elsewhere but you don’t need a special photo to know what they look like)

Main bathroom — these turned out to be green rather than blue, causing major ructions at the time, but I rather like them. The shower also has metro tiling.

En suite bathroom — finding tiles to fit with the antique brass fittings proved a nightmare. I would strongly advise against putting yourself through that and stick with chrome!

oh wow, serious business kabbes, those are the sort of handmade artisanal small batch tiles that i am trying to not look at.

Currently definitely not looking at all at these, which they make both plain and with the star, so you could just dot stars about whimsically.

Those are really beautiful.

But actually, we looked long and hard for near-equivalents of the artisanal tiles that the kabbess originally found, which were the ones that were preposterously expensive. All of the ones you see are not too bad. I mean, they aren't Topps Tiles prices but neither are they hundreds of pounds per square metre (I've actually got a horrible feeling that the original ones she wanted may even have been £580 per square foot rather than square metre).

I seem to remember that the bathroom floor and en suite wall tiles came from Fired Earth. The kitchen ones that are seriously lovely came from Ireland and were dirt cheap -- something well less than a fiver a tile, I think. I'm sure I remember the entire batch being less than £50 in total. The en suite floor tiles were also surprisingly cheap but I don't remember where they came from.

If you keep at it, you may well find something a bit more mass produced that isn't quite as nice as those blue star ones but are not too far off and a fraction of the price.

Doing this stuff and having to negotiate & agree it all with another person, i don't think i'd be any good at doing that.

Oh it's straightforward enough. She constantly reviews all blogs on earth and from this finds beautiful things that are stupidly expensive. I then say "no, find something cheaper" and suggest the bottom bargain basement option. She then finds something I still view as stupidly expensive but reluctantly agree as being only within three times of the budget I had in mind.

I take it you’ve looked at Tiles Direct? I think that may have been where we sourced those Irish tiles. I haven’t seriously looked for an equivalent to the ones you posted above but a search for “blue star” starts to show some that are nice enough to give me hope that you might find something at a sensible price.

Other than that, I can only recommend google image searches with imaginative search terms!

Yeah, the originals are very expensive. They're a design classic and still made today.

We tried to buy a knockoff at one point but the whole company was a scam

that is the sample i have! Not working for me at all. Will not give up. Also it is very not urgent, existing floor does its job of being a floor its just annoying.

When it comes to tiles I have a thing against using tile trim and am therefore often looking for ones with glazed-edge corner variants which is one way to slash the range of options right down.

Reno thats an amazing job, it looks like a magazine room. Is the sofa comfy tho, can you properly chill out in there? You definitely have an interior decorators eye.

kabbes I think you live in a dream house, it looks so beautiful and like something you could only imagine. It also feels that you are creating it with your loved one, like this beautiful home for her, I love that 😊 xx

The sofa is comfy and the room is chill friendly, though I'm still getting used to it as things never quite look as I imagine them. I live a dull, small post-war flat in Berlin and I still miss my London flat a little, which was even smaller but architecturally beautiful. I never totally felt at home in Berlin, the pandemic has taken away everything that's great about the city, its nightlife, its culture and just left what's not so great, at a point when I was still settling in here. So this is my attempt to make my flat really mine so I can feel at home here. BTW it's all based on a vague memory of a British horror film from the 70s, it's the type of place where Joan Collins would murder someone or get murdered with an axe, but then that's me. :)

That’s cool. I live in a post war council house! I’m very proud of it because in my view it’s the perfect home. It’s definitely the perfect size for me and my kids, I wouldn’t want anywhere bigger as you’d rattle round and I’d find that a bit creepy. It’s got a lovely garden too 😊

that doesn't apply to floors does it or does it?

Thanks, the general colour idea is blue, yellow, bit of grey and I wanted the feel to be harking back to the Edwardian heritage of the house, but with a modern 'lightness' rather than the 'heavy' feel you might get from period drapery, fireplaces etc [/wankydecoratormode]

I think you've managed it perfectly, it fits the house but with a light and airy modern feel and it doesn't sound wankydecoratormode to me at all.

I especially love the picture and cushions and other artworks - very fitting.
