Show us yer house and house-related meddlings

I think striking more than obnoxious. It's a strong colour but not offensive. It looks lovely with the picture and the pink chair.
Ta!

I checked with my missus and our Valspar paints, both the green and the bathroom, had two coats, not three. My obvious advice is don't make any judgements based on first coat, either on colour or finish.

Will check again in the morning, in daylight - it looks more purple under artifical light.

I did the sample sections of ours and in particular the green looked properly nuts on the first coat. Even after the first full pass by the decorator it was still pretty 'WTF have we done', proper #00FF00 primary school stuff. The blue was much more stable from the beginning but still you wouldn't have wanted to make any calls on it with just one coat.

I think it will be OK once finished. I am going for grey sofas, which will help tone it down if it's too intense.

Good plan. You might need three coats with that colour. If you think you might possibly need another coat, then you probably do!
Have just checked on it, definitely two coats, it's very patchy in the middle of the wall, but fairly solid elsewhere. In contrast the white paint took three coats.but fairly even coverage throughout.

You could paint it but I think it'd have to come off. If it's anything like ours then it's just two fixings on the upper outside and lots of sealant. But even that would potentially be messy to make right.

I do feel like you could do *something* to the fireplace. That rather treacly varnish looks pretty new to me. It's not gorgeous old patina or anything.
That's why I think it's repro, the colour is all wrong. Plus the carving or moulding is still very sharp, and older one would be smoother, I think.

I'd never get it off the wall by myself, and if by some miracle I could, I doubt I'd get it back on. It has two screws either side, one near the bottom and one nearer the top.

I could tape paper around it and then spray paint it, perhaps. But I've no idea what colour. I think I'd rather leave it.

Eta: I think the options are basically black, to match the base plate of the fireplace, or white. But I'm not sure white would work with the tiles which are red flowers on a cream background. Any thoughts and input gratefully received.

Also, no daylight picture today, as very little daylight. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit brighter.

Woodwork done on two sides, but have run out of masking tape. There's about 12 feet left to do, and the back of the door.

New bookcases have arrived, but waiting to finish woodwork and do the mantlepiece before assembling them.

I really like how the light very definitely falls into the room. I think it's lovely and you'll enjoy the varying degrees of the natural and artificial light in days to come.

Lighting is crucial with dark colours and that's something I've been pondering as I'm trying to sort my hallway out but am very indecisive because it's quite an angular and dark space. Current lighting is shit and I just hate walking through it every single day.
Maybe I'll post pictures for design ideas... :hmm:

You should definitely post pictures for ideas. Lots of ideas on this thread. Everyone is really encouraging and helpful too.
