It's worth doing the ceiling now if there's any way you can, now you've got the room cleared. It's an opportunity that may be hard to replicate later on when it's really grubby. Doing the ceiling is always a performance - the walls you can do in stages by just pulling the furniture away from them but to do the ceiling needs a lot of clear space.

I'd really agree with this, hardest bit but massive reward if you be arsed with elevation or extendable rollers etc.

I did sky and clouds in my front room about 12 years ago. Still get chuffed lying on my sofa looking up. :D

White above the picture rail, blue-grey colour below. White woodwork. After cleaning it all, it looks like the previous owner hadn't painted the picture rail in a while.

Hoping to pick up some grey velvet sofas in the sales.

That sounds fab! I did a kind of blood and custard with white above the picture rail and white paintwork, and I did makeover the fireplace and painted the knackered old bronze set with barbecue paint, which made it look amazing. It's a repro fireplace or I wouldn't have messed so much.

In our house we do have a new addition, the Christmas present* I got for my missus:

It's 'Things To Come' by Simon Kenny.

I'm more pleased with the fact that I managed to put in a wall anchor (complete with a makeshift washer from a drilled 5 cent coin) without it all falling down... so far...

*we're not here for Christmas and it couldn't be transported

That's way bolder than I imagined! Very nice though, it'll look stunning I think!

That Valspar stuff does give good coverage though? I used for hall and stairs and it did a great job.

Paint can vary in coverage from colour to colour. Valspar is fine for the lighter colours. I've not tried the darker colours - they are less forgiving and can show up variability.

White just about done, have started with the blue-grey. It's drying a bit darker than I thought, nearer to the original shade I chose. The valspar paint is thinner/runnier than the dulux I used for the white. View attachment 156650

That's looking good, it's brighter than I expected. When you said blue/grey I thought you might have gone for Stiff Key Blue like our bathroom and every man and his dog, but that's more grey. It'll be interesting to see how it looks when it's had enough coats (three?) but I think it's the right call.

In the end I like our green that everyone thought was  but it really does require subdued lighting. I think yours will be a lot more versatile

Nice, our cup of tea. I think one of our regrets is not getting a white fireplace.
I’m loving the amount of white you have above the picture rail which will really set it off. Liking forward to seeing the final result. Big rooms with high ceilings work with bold colours. Ours was magnolia- ish yellow before and just looked dull and grubby.

I think you mean EG - ours is just about done save for more art on the wall. Some earlier pics here throughout this page: Show us yer house and house-related meddlings

It still looks a bit obnoxious in pics; it's pretty hard to photograph since it works best in low light. But I definitely agree with you. Also stuff on the walls does a lot to make bold colours perform better.

Sorry but I also love yours that green is amazing and the contrast is the same. We also have wooden floors. I don’t think it looks obnoxious at all. We have yet to sort out pictures but will do eventually.

I think striking more than obnoxious. It's a strong colour but not offensive. It looks lovely with the picture and the pink chair.

I need to take some decent pics myself - I do almost everything with a phone now but I do have proper cameras and should put more effort in. We're definitely on the same page with choices though
