Show us yer house and house-related meddlings

He’s left the UK because of Brexit.

Let me see if I can find the receipt- can’t remember

Joiner I used to use has left and he says the same, although he's been building a house in Poland for a while now and he said he wants work closer to home. Bloody shame. He did some really lovely work and showed me how to do loads, too.

Only took us a year, but finally hung some paintings over the bed. The woman in the frame to the left hung for years in my parents' bedroom and was known to us as kids as The Rude Lady, so I'm delighted to welcome her to our bedroom! IMG_20181105_135921.jpg

When the builders knocked a hole in the kitchen wall, they found this hiding under the stairs

So there’s an unexpected thing.
Ah yes, these implements are quite typical of the ones carried by the iron age inhabitants of Surrey. They were used to fend off attacks from the Romans, but not very effectively. When the Romans introduced proper houses to the south of england, it was common for the indigenous peoples to store these things under the stairs, and drink wine instead of fighting with the authorities, a tradition which continues to this day in the area.

before you pass comment about it being £££££- fuck off- kitchen units aside, virtually everything was S/H and sonderpreis, down to the stove and the seating. lights were reclaimed and rebuilt. and i am mortgaged to fuck to pay for it. thats the lot. i wanted a juke box or a marine tank but thats not going to happen.i would stick the pics of the art up but i would be slated for it as well.

It looks really really cheap. Happy now?

DSC_0333.JPG So, my vague plan over Christmas this year is to repaint the living room. In preparation for that I had to get a load of furniture left by the previous owner taken away. I tried to get various charities to come and take the furniture and kitchenware, and only one would come, and then they refused to take half of what the said they would. In end I had to pay someone to take it away for disposal, which was a bit annoying, but it's gone now.

It is surprisingly hard to get charities interested even in nearly new top quality furniture. I guess they just don’t have the space and the turnover of stock to really justify it.

I wouldn't have minded so much if they were clearer about what they would accept on their websites. The one that eventually came refused to take any of the kitchenware, even though their website said they were looking for donations of it. None of them said only nearly new furniture in perfect condition or brand new new furniture would be uplifted.

Anyway, it's gone and I can start thinking about what colour to do the walls, so far all I have is a shade of grey or dark blue. I am also thinking about painting the mantelpiece, it's not original to the property and doesn't quite match the style of the tiled surround, so I thought paining it might improve it a bit.

Freecycle and gumtree are good ways to get rid of old furniture. Or just leaving it in the street.
I could not have gotten sofas or bookcases down the stairs and out onto the street by myself. I 've been trying for months to get rid of it. Plus the council is really really hot on anything that could be flytipping or stuff jyst dumped on the street. Other streets are quieter and might get away with it, I'm right on a main road at a busy junction.
