If a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is a key piece of your defense strategy, you should have two of them surely. What do they do if the CdG is in the yard and France needs to defend itself?
This is the rationale for the royal navy having two new carriers, right?

They will use the Prince of Wales. Unless there is a significant uplift in defence spending we will never have enough fixed wing to operate both at the same time.

We ended up with POW because it was cheaper to keep building it than cancel the contract.

I think the four main uses of POW are:

Back up in case something happens to the Queen Elizabeth.

Helicopter carrier alongside the QE mostly fixed wing if we ended up in a near peer war.

Joint operation with the French, RN crew with a French ( badged as European/ NATO) fixed wing and/or helicopter force.

Fucking amazing venue for FCDO cocktail parties when Big Lizzie not available…

I heard they’d already started cannibalising the one that broke down. It remains to be see if PoW ever re-enters service

The French gov't at the time could only get funding authorised for the one. But they figured they'd come back in a year or two and point out that one is useless and you need two.
That didn't work. I like CdG, she's pretty. But a white elephant for sure.

Um UK carriers can't operate EUropean manufactured carrier based aircraft

Further googling establishes they wanted to have 2 but never got round to it.

paf. * shrugs shoulders gallicly *

Aren't they due to start building another one next year? Based on the Queen Elizabeth/Prince of Wales design.

I also have a vague memory that the CDG was built with significant compatibility for US carrier-based aircraft on the expectation that French and US carriers would be operating together/dovetailing? To a less capable extent, both the Foch and Clemenceau had similar modification during their service lives.

Despite the fractious nature of the France/NATO relationship, on an operational level, France remained aligned and an active participant in the US/NATO's strategic air plans.

Doubt it . The French aren't going to build a carrier they can't land french built aircraft on...was bad enough QE2 was built to be flagship of the EUropean navy with said problem

Rotary is no problem now . Fixed wing yes at the moment until the French buy F35s to maintain a carrier option.

Lol . You'll be forecasting cold days in hell next

The EU's 6gen will be a bit of a bun fight though. I'll give you that. Hope Dassault wins out.

It's easier to surrender with one.

(Sorry)
