Given that there was not much expectation of there being anywhere to land on their return, that was somewhat understandable...

Given that the UK is committed to initiating a first strike in certain circumstances, then perhaps there would have been something to come back home to. A “successful” first strike would of course have required the assistance of the USA, to destroy all the USSR’s nuclear missiles and bombs.

TBF, they started with the props and added the jets later. They were only turned on for takeoff and a dash over the target; the jets normally just sat there doing nothing in standard flight.

I saw a pair of Greek F-4E's recently - low, fast, smoking and then they lit the burners: went to about warp 5, smoke went and the ground shook.

It was a very odd thing - seeing F-4's in the wild was a bit like catching a glimpse of dinosaurs chewing the cud in the fields, and making me feel both very old and very young. I'd first seen Phantoms up close in Germany aged 15, and had been a pivotal moment in my life, so it was both like shedding 30+ years, and feeling that 30+ years crashing into me.

Weird. But wonderful...
