Russell Brand: rape and sexual abuse allegations, grifting and general dodginess - discussion

They usually ignore parts of the Bible that don't jive with what they are doing. And by they? I mean
cult leaders. Which Is where Brand is possibly heading. Why be a weirdo sex pest conspiracy theorist when you can
be a cult leader and rake the cash in hand over fist. But I could be wrong.

TBF, there's no need to choose between being a cult leader and a weirdo sex pest conspiracy theorist; it's perfectly possible to combine all those attributes into one great big weirdo-sex-pest-conspiracy-theorist-cult-leader amalgamation.

He just very publically joined the biggest cult going…

The shameless pursuit of fame and money really is incredible.

It's that and attempting to avoid accountability for his actions. He's probably finished as a standup comic and actor,
so religious guru/cult leader it is, using his verbose verbal skills. Everything is a performance when it comes to Brand.

Maybe he was heading there all these years. The pontification, the waffle, the sermons, the speeches, the flowery language, the dressing up as a figure of religious importance in heels and hats, the to-camera monologues, the sidestepping from celebrity to figurehead. Destiny, or God's hand.

I was at university with a reasonable, sane working class bloke who got a lucky break and became a top theatre director. I mentioned him to my sister the other day and she found this.

Ian Rickson on working with Russell Brand.

"I guess it's exciting to work with someone who is shamanic, who draws it from the underworld, from the soul or from the celestial realms and can fly with that."

So easy to be drawn in and shout a pile of wank eh Ian?

Emperor's New Clothes an' all that.

i think tis quite likely Brand has gone Christian not just for a grift...he was studying religion at SOAS not that long ago and he has the personality type for it

It does seem to be quite the thing for right-wing grifter types though. As I said, Matt Le Tissier's now decided he's a Christian too. And not the Gavin Peacock kind, or even the Roberto Firmino megachurch 'G-d told me to go to Saudi Arabia' kind.

If I were to do a degree, I quite fancy doing religion. I'd like to think I wouldn't use it to grift and abuse people with. Others I've known who've studied it haven't, and just go on to lead normal lives with jobs that have little to do with their degree.
