Redundant? Looking for work? Vacancies posted here!

I feel like I'm too old to do an apprenticeship (am I?) because employers are looking for fresh meat (are they?).

in theory, there is now no age limit on apprenticeships, although things like sex and race discrimination laws have been on the books for nearly 50 years and there's some employers haven't quite grasped them yet.

there was something mentioned in the budget a few months back about a scheme specifically aimed at over 50's but this doesn't seem to have got as far as any detail yet, and may only be open to people who are currently on benefits or who have been out of work for x amount of time. but NCS are likely to know more than me.

from today's meeting, VR = roughly double compulsory£££

in that case, probably worth it.

although i have a vague idea there are some rules about going back in to public sector once you've taken VR - i remember there was one bloke at a past workplace who had been at a fairly senior level and came back fairly soon after redundancy, but he couldn't go above a fairly basic admin grade as it would have had negative financial implications (i think it was around redundancy, but he may have been on early retirement pension as well.) i'm really not sure what the current rules are. there have been a few cases of people at chief officer level getting redundancy deals one week and starting at another authority almost the next, and the tories were making noises about 'doing something about it' but not sure they did.

Benefits: hadn't really considered not working tbh - have never signed on so I have no idea what the deal is

if it comes to it, if in doubt, apply for everything and argue if they say no. you've paid in to the bloody system...

thanks for this ⬆️

In the past, if you went onto the redeployment list you were disbarred from taking VR. I've been told today that this is no longer the case and you can be on both lists now. However, after speaking with someone who sits on the Personnel committee I'm confused as they have heard nothing about this, and that cttee would have to vote it through  Anyway - reeling a bit but not surprised. Dunno about keeping the £££ if redeployed into a lower grade- haven't heard that before, worth asking about, though

I haven't liked the job for a number of years so this might be the impetus to do summat else that I needed - however - I'm in my early 50s, disabled, and neurodivergent - so I can't see my journey being as smooth as I would like. I have been looking into what the National Careers Service can do for me as regards finding another role or retraining.
There should be a redundancy policy available as a document, that's always worth a read.

I'm sorry, redundancy is shit even if the process is handled with sensitivity and care. It fucking sucks

Aye - tru dat.

I understand the reasons, of course. Local Govt / Local Councils are going through very hard times financially. It just sucks.
The expectation that we do more with less is just mental. We're slashing services. Extending SLAs. Not doing that which isn't legally required. Automating as much as possible by driving stuff online so that people can be taken out of the systems. Ho Hum.

No one is looking forward to monthly bin collections, no Council run (ie. affordable) swimming pools, no flowers in parks, the basics being the norm. Yet "customer" (Council Tax paying residents) expectations have never been higher :(

I've been consulted. And assessed. There's no more money or room for myself and a colleague at the Local Authority where we work, so we're both surplus and a new structure will come into place in October. Ho Hum. VR is an option but feels like it ain't enough. Too young to have my pension made up :(

It's happening - at risk of redundancy ➡️ didn't get the 1 job that the 3 of us were considered for ➡️ just waiting for timescales now :( feels weird tbh

Probably more one for any parents that has a child of suitable age looking to break into the live events industry…

I have an apprenticeship place coming up in my concert hall (Birmingham) from September. Anyone interested, PM me.

My other half is currently looking around for jobs as she's just done with the college she works at, her background is FE SEND FT lecturer, and we're looking to move to the south coast (Shoreham By Sea), so ideally looking for somewhere that's commutable from both there and Redhill for the moment. She doesn't drive yet though.
