PPE is still a frigging joke in this country.

At my trust all patients are given FRSM (fluid resistant surgical masks) before and after any procedures. This is to protect them from staff as well as staff from patients.

I reported a staff member yesterday for not wearing ppe when around a patient and touching the patient and then not washing hands

Jesus😳

Please tell your bro to put his scrubs at the end of his shift in a pillow case and then immediately shove the pillow case with the scrubs inside into the washer as soon as he gets home. Wash at 60 degrees. Is he washing himself before leaving the hospital? Imo I think leaving dirty scrubs dirty for 3 days is a bad idea.
ETA or if he takes a pink/red algenate laundry bag and puts his scrubs in there and puts that in the wash-the bag melts and is designed for infected linen to be able to he washed without causing contamination.

There is no place for staff to wash in the hospital. Many drs are turning up without scrubs. He bought his own.
He rubs alcohol gel all over his hair, face, neck, arms and hands before leaving hospital. Once home he gets straight into the shower. It happens to be right beside his front door in the hall. He carries home the scrubs in a paper bag. And leaves them in a designated press. After 3 days he says the virus is dead. Then he puts them in a hot wash and burns the bag. Bleaches the press in the hall and shower every day.

I'll pass on your advice to him anout the algenate laundry bags.. thanks.. 👍👍🙂

No prob x
The virus is killed at below 60 degrees -the advice is to wash at 60. I dont see the sense in him leaving potential virus on his clothes for 3 days when he can kill it straight away:confused: The red algenate bags are kept on the wards with the other laundry bags.

His shifts are getting very long. I think when he gets home he just wants to get in the shower and then bed. He lives on his own and I think he is exhausted. He worked yesterday and last night and most of today. He will phone later so I will pass on about the red bags. He is on again tomorrow night and Monday.
Thanks for the good advice. 👍

Has anyone in government explained WHY there is a shortage? This is not clear.
Demand for PPE is massive, government has probably used up their stockpiles and now they are trying to buy more PPE from manufacturers around the world. But every country affected by covid-19 is also buying and bidding for the same PPE so the demand is massive.

Possibly the UK could be making more PPE here in the UK and government seems to have been slow in realising this as a source of PPE.

Time to get people with sewing machines and an ability to follow a pattern on the case...something has to be done. It's beyond a disaster for these vulnerable workers.

'In exceptional circumstances' is the weasel detail they hide behind at the moment when claiming their PPE advice follows WHO guidance. Well the exceptional circumstances are 'running low on supplies' and of course the likes of WHO have to put planning for such contingencies into their guidance. That doesnt mean we are following some kind of great best practice.

PPE should be there to stop any danger to life in the workplace. Not just for NHS or care workers but the number of bus drivers who have died is shocking. I hope those responsible will be held to account for this. You would not send a firefighter into a burning building in just their underwear would you? That is what it seems to me they are doing with others. Fucking scandal!

Earlier this evening an RAF A400 out of Brize flew to Istanbul in the hope of the delayed PPE promised over the weekend materialising.

It is looking increasingly like perhaps Turkey realised they needed the kit themselves or we have been gazumped by someone like the USA.

Has anyone seen any evidence that the "buy PPE from the UK" initiative is bearing any fruit?

Well I know locally that Ricardo is manufacturing & supplying face-shields to local hospitals & care homes, free of charge.
