It’s really worrying but there doesn’t seem to be any clarity on how bad it is at the moment for local wildlife.

There seems to have been quite a few hours between discovering the leak and it being announced on the news. It’s been warm and sunny here this afternoon so people (loons) will have been swimming.

The Graun article talks about a leak of 200 barrels of 'reservoir fluid', whatever that is.
A barrel is 158.987 litres. so that's nearly 32,000 litres of whatever it is. Booms have been placed and cleanup is underway.

It seems a lot and it will be vile, but maybe not as catastrophic as it sounds?

ETA for comparison, an Olympic swimming pool holds 2.5 million litres.

ah, yes, if is fluid, then its the output. Mud is often chucked into pools and pits before processing and can leach and contaminate stuff on site - overflowing if its been wet depending on the storage approach
