Peckham Town FC - news and discussion

It was so dark the end infra red glasses would have come in handy but Peckham fought back from 0-1 to triumph 2-1. It was one hell of a tough game but that coveted 9th position in the league could be all ours!
I mean, we’re eighth now but…

Pics! I'm pretty impressed with the camera given how dark it was.

"On Saturday, they have their last home fixture when they take on Tenterden Town FC. We’ll be there!"

Last Saturday home fixture. There's another one next Wednesday and a third on bank holiday 1st May, according to the fixture list on the Kent County League website.

Received this email from the club regarding Season Tickets...

Finally, we have our last home match of the season coming up on Monday (1 May). Season tickets for the 23/24 season will be on sale for just £45, and this will include 15 league matches and any friendlies we play. After 1 May, season tickets will be on sale for £50 - prices will remain frozen from last season. So, don't miss out on this great opportunity to secure your ticket for next season!

Suffered a well deserved 0-4 tonking at the Menace today. Really had that end of season nothing to play for' kinda vibe.

On the plus side, there was a devilishly handsome chap featured in the match programme and the crowd was a hefty 266, which isn't far short of the club record.

Because global warming wil make it too hot to run around for 90 minutes in summer an issue?

Unfortunately a fair chunk of existing grounds go under water if current predictions prove true Look at CoCo Division One this season for the issues where ground have brooks / streams nearby. Less global warming than cost cutting in clearing up but....

Interesting thought that an “extra 1%” might come from having the most climate change resilient ground…
Although of course there is precedent. Eg Lancs not winning the title for 77 years in rainy Manchester and then securing it the one year they play in balmy Liverpool.

I used to live next door to the Aigburth ground. It did typically lose fewer days to rain than Old Trafford. Not sure now.

As am aside, the ground is quite important in the history of football in Liverpool.

Edited to say for a few years I have been recording butterfly presence locally. The forecast this year was it would be a brutal year as the heatwave last year killed lots of plants caterpillars need. It's too too early to judge but the early signs are worrying. The Holly Blue is well up, all the other early fliers are well down in this area.

What’s the football connection?

It’s a lovely ground. Best job I had in my life was doing the score box for a Lancs county game there in the mid-90s. Got to have lunch and tea with the players each day. Absolutely speechless with awe sat next to Wasim one day. And similarly seeing Ian Austin demolish a tray of sandwiches.

Sorry blanked on the team name, it was a gentleman's team not a working class one so probably something like Liverpool Casuals. They played out of there and helped popularise the sport in the city.

As an aside the first Liverpudlian to play for England was Rupert Darnley Anderson (his brother William was an FA Cup winner). Darnley ended his days at Waverley Abbey House, not far from where I live now. A bit grander than my place mind.

Did a bit of Googling this afternoon.

The pavilion is the oldest still in First Class use.

And the ground hosted an England international 140 years ago, in 1883. The hosts beating Ireland 7-0.

Missing the football and can't wait for Hamlet next Saturday? Then the Menace Arena has two matches before the Altona friendly. First up, tomorrow we host Hassocks. It'll be a tough game as they are two levels higher and have been busy in June making lots of signings.

We then have a very rare Friday night match vs Stonewall FC. We have put it on the Friday to enable visiting Altona fans to have a second match to watch, and Stonewall seemed the ideal visitors given the inclusive ethos of all four clubs.

We hope to see as many as possible for both matches, but particularly next Friday. Who knows, with your help, perhaps the 275 attendance record could be beaten?
