Nearly the end at Paddington today (HST)

Which route are they still running on btw?

Cardiff-Bristol-Taunton and Exeter-Plymouth-Penzance, plus various in-between services. Someone mentioned to me they do an Exeter-Newquay trip on summer Saturdays.

Plus there's still the ones in service with Cross Country, East Midlands Trains, Scotrail and LNER.

I remember the HST prototype parked up in the long siding at Chippenham one afternoon after a test run from Swindon ...
I went for a good grice and was lucky enough to be allowed a quick look inside (before the days of carrying a camera) which when I told my little brother somewhat annoyed him, as he had been "moved along" quickly by BTP. I think my late father also managed a look just before they tootled off back to Swindon.

I remember a great many trips up and down the country in them, and Bro now works in control from Xcountry ...

I've also seen the NR one, now that does look like a flying banana, in all-over yellow - can't miss that in the landscape !

Several times in the past few years HSTs have been diverted along the Tyne Valley (I miss the turbo charger scream) which runs behind the workshop ...

TiG - diverted HST

I was actually waiting for a kettle ...

The theme tune was quite catchy.

That's because it was adapted from a popular Music Hall song "Oh Mr Porter"

The eponymous1930's Will Hay film, is still very funny. It is a classic comedy of male ineptitude and failiure, the inspiration for Hancock, Steptoe, Dad's Army, Only Fools and Horses.

If you have nothing better to do it mightkeep you amused till lunchtime

Sad to see the end of such a stalwart piece of technology, although I think Scotrail will still be using them, IIRC.

Yes, and there's still 11 'short sets' retained for GWR, plus Cross Country retain a handful for the SW-NE/Glasgow/Edinburgh route. There's talk of Cross Country getting some for the Birmingham-Norwich run. I think GWR are keeping three full sets for big sports events, Glastonbury etc. too.

The East Midlands sets should be around a little longer as well.

Too good a design to bin completely.

Heard and slightly saw with my Dad at Reading. Noisy (but mournful), as with two weeks ago, on the horns..

And the East Coast Main Line for a bit longer. Azumas (same as the IETs on GWR) are starting to be introduced though, replacing the 225s aswell.

Hadn't heard of Birmingham-Norwich, nor the full sets for special events, but nice if you're right :)

Loads of resting HSTs are apparently being stored at Ely. Did also read possibly Long Marston, though not sure now..

Hope they can paint some coaches and another power car into original colours, that would look amazing.

Come up to see us at St Albans , - a group visit even - we can indulge your level pulling desires in many ways. Anyway - worked that box at the age of about 14 , under supervision of course and delighted to see it has hardly changed after a lot of years.

Sorry, did you mean this one? (Better picture for you if you did)

There were great cheap offers (like Cardiff - London for 125 pence) , and much more. A perfect launch of a good train. Served us very well over the years. Good memories.
I remember in the early days of HST we spent a fair few weekends going to London from Cardiff for the day. I seem to remember we had free tickets from Persil washing powder.

Great shot , yes that is the box all right and I see the River Towy Yacht club building is still very much there. It used to have a very pleasant coal fire and the ideal place to drink tea and chat with the signalman - doubt you could do that these safety critical days. Alas
