just like corona, we think we have turned a corner, but it comes back again...
His movement is excellentCavani has been a revelation, I thought he might be past it but today he comes on at half-time, makes one and scores 2 like a proper old-fashioned poacher, great stuff to turn the game around
If the person he was replying to wasn’t black, why would he use the word? That would be much worse.Cavani facing a potential ban:
Edinson Cavani could face three-game ban as FA investigates social media post | Manchester United | The Guardian
Context being everything, I'm much more likely to believe Cavani (that he didn't know about the English usage) than Suarez, who I didn't believe at all. If nothing else there's no indication that the person Cavani was responding to was black, whereas Suarez was bring explicitly and directly racist to Evra. Needless to say though, if it turns out Cavani did know about the English usage, he deserves everything he gets.
It can be used to refer to anyone with relatively dark skin or dark hair in parts of South America, even if they’re ‘white’. From what I can gather they usually invoke the Jim Davidson ‘it’s a sign of affection’ defence when called out on it. ForIf the person he was replying to wasn’t black, why would he use the word? it is used as a ‘friendly’ term in Uruguay, shit tho that is. If he is actually replying to a mate, said mate would probably take it in that context, whereas Suarez knew it would be offensive but thought he might be able to blag it.
In the case of Cavani, I'd guess I'd guess there's at least a possible/legitimate defence to be made around the Uruguayan use of the term. Not one I'm qualified to make and I'd like to hear from someone with direct experience of that usage in South America. In the case of Suarez, there was no defence at all and he actually used the word negro as mentioned by ignatious. If the person he was replying to wasn’t black, why would he use the word? The FA rules state that ‘the use of any threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour in reference to a person’s ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion or belief, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or disability is completely unacceptable.’In the case of Cavani, I'd guess I'd guess there's at least a possible/legitimate defence to be made around the Uruguayan use of the term.
YesWill Cavani be able to play tonight? Man Utd have PSG in the Champions League
Cheers. The FA rules state that ‘the use of any threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour in reference to a person’s ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, religion or belief, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or disability is completely unacceptable.’
I wouldn’t say Cavani was being threatening, abusive or indecent but there's a good argument that he was being insulting by UK cultural standards so he should get a ban imo.
Worth noting also that the interim FA chairman, replacing the hapless Greg Clarke, is none other than Peter McCormick who was Suarez’s lawyer in the Evra case, and who represented Bowyer and Woodgate when they were charged with a racist attack in Leeds. During the Leeds case he advised Michael Duberry not to change his statement even though the player told him it wasn’t true. Duberry was subsequently charged with perverting the course of justice. McCormick is an OBE.
I haven't read what he said, but I'd be a bit wary of that if it amounted to 'foreign players need more diversity training than our lads'. If it was part of the induction that any player gets, that would be fine. I'm a bit wary of top down diversity training, a thing owned by bosses and personnel departments, but that's a different issue. It would at least be being delivered on an equal basis.Waiting to see if the EPL or FA take up Gary Nevilles suggestion that all foreign players should be subject to diversity training. Obviously it would have to be done before they step on the pitch or are allowed to use social media here but if it cuts this sort of stuff out from these Latin types then its surely worth considering. .

the idea that a man who spent 5 plus years in multi-cultural Paris needs ‘diversity training’ is red-Nev trying to come off like he has all the answers whilst protecting a Yanited player. Bury Yonner he is. Not even Manc.
