Man United - the team that gets me excited? 2024-2026

Is Carrick in with a shout? I went to the Norwich Middlesbrough game at the weekend, highly entertaining for a neutral and Middlesbrough play great ball. Maybe too soon though.

yeah, badly run club for sure. and it has been too crap too many times, so his days were numbered. just a bit of a bad luck thrown into the mix recently.

it is the sign of the times that managers get hardly any time now. 2/3 years is just the norm. I was looking at Chelsea's recent managers and it's crazy - about one every year.
Thing is while being the 2nd most successful one while there he also broke multiple records for bad performance going back ages. It's late October and we are 14th with the worst start to a season in 35 years. He's bought basically an entire team in that time, sure he brought through a few youngsters which is great since they seem to be in general better than the ones he bought for those positions. He has had some bloody awful transfers for way too much money, Antony was awful in about 12 different ways, refused to play alternatives since so much was put into him, just completely not a workable manager in the premier league it seems. Cups you can be lucky at, league performance is everything tho eventually. How many people kept going on at Arsenal under Wenger for 4th being an achievement. I'd be very happy with us being 4th now.

In theory the squad looks far better but thats still barely a 50% hit rate. Martinez is good, Onana is barely an upgrade but for the playstyle sure, we had ball playing keepers before and he has made some good saves, needs a stable defence. Højlund seems promising but not finished for a club like United are supposed to be, should be the player fighting the main one.
Easier to list the ones that went wrong, Zirkhee is unconvincing, Casemiro faded after a season, De Ligt is iffy, Mazraoui the same, Ugarte is adapting, Yoro looks good but injuries, Mount was as bad a disaster as Antony. First season in general was a mess, keeper we didn't need, midfielder we wildly overpaid for no reason and a striker that was not remotely first choice. We have a mix of rejects from other clubs and people we overpaid for that didn't perform.

He had a team now he bought most of which is more than most of the others and it still didn't work. On paper we look quite good, the players simply don't appear to work with whatever the system is supposed to be and we are incapable of signing a good right winger. Thats long term issues, idk why no one can solve it. They did underinvest for a long time but recently, its hard to argue. We just got less appealing and worse at recruitment.

So half an hour ago Thomas Frank was going to be appointed, and now Amorim is a done deal. And that’s just the Guardian. United derangement syndrome.

Sky Sports Germany also saying Amorim is a done deal pending Sporting ‘finding a solution’ ie compensation I suppose .

He’s a very promising coach but I’m not sure he’s ready for this tbh .

It gets worse, now a photo from 11 years ago of interim manager Van Nistelrooy in 'black face' turns up.

5 or 10 points deduction? You know it makes sense.

Perfect.

Looking forward to him joining RB Leipzig in order to resurrect his career in 18 months time.

Managing a mid table club? I think he's ready.

Apparently City want him too if Pep quits. If I was him I would wait for that offer.

£17 million is crazy.

to be fair, we finished 2nd under Ole, which seems quite aspirational now. (and would be some sort of fever dream for Chelsea fans...)

£17m is a payday based on the remaining value of his contract. Which was extended recently, somewhat bafflingly.

I've always said the best job in the world must be being the 3rd choice keeper at a 'big' club like United. You're never gonna to have actually do anything.

But clearly being the United manager is even simpler. Just fuck it all up and stroll off into the sunset trousering £17m. Plus whatever his base pay was for the last couple of years,

Well this was thought through well, no particular target. Except possibly one we can't afford cos we have to pay off this manager first. There are some frees about but Xavi or Zidane I just don't see fancying taking it on. Would mean an actual playstyle tho hopefully, whether we could pull it off is another thing.

One of his best, for the second panel (for anyone who saw what happened at Brighton v Wolves), and the last panel for all you who are getting excited.

Portuguese sports papers are saying Sporting want Amorim to stay for the next three games and leave in the international break.

You can see the draw for Amorim, presumably millions more in wages - perhaps I should just stop there! - and all the 'big club/high profile league' stuff. Equally, he might do something extraordinary and get them up as high as last season's 8th! But then you think, is his life going to be better than it is now, say 18 months on? He's top of the table in Portugal and in with a chance of direct progression in the Champions League. What kind of shit will he be facing at United with a weak squad and very little chance of champions league next year? Don't do it mate, oh fuck, he's already signed...

Seriously though, you do wonder why someone might think United would be a good vehicle for their ambitions. Odd thing to say given they are still one of the richest in the world, but the last decade has been so awful, to the point where it appears hard to get good players at the club (at least in their prime). He could have won more silverware where he was than at United.

Well coached they might start going in the right direction. Going to have to get something out of the squad they've got though I would think.
