London Overground

Now Liz is dead and has a whole line named after her could they rename the Jubilee Line 'the Fleet Line' as it was original planned as?
It was originally planned to go somewhere near the river Fleet, but in the end didn't and got diverted south of the river, instead.

I've only been on the Goblin once, but my inner Tory still slightly resents it not being officially called that. This is a good sign because these names will piss off all the right people, and leave the far-Right volk frothing and threshing. LeytonCatLady, you'll need to report back to us on how badly Laurence Fox is taking it.

I don't really like them but like AS says, it might just be not liking change much. Even though I was in favour of them changing!

Mildmay supposedly being named for the hospital is odd. It doesn't go near the hospital and I'm not comfortable with honouring the gay community by... reminding people of AIDS.

It feels lazy. Like 'we need one for women. Suffragette'll do! Oh and one for people who've come here from other places. Windrush'll work." Etc. I mean of course be inclusive but it doesn’t feel like much thought or effort has gone into it really.

Doesn't affect me but if i were a tube taker I'd actually prefer the names to suggest where the trains are going because I get confused easily when trying to catch trains with not much time left. Then you could also have the Barking Line which would seem apt :)

Well then what does Metropolitan line mean? Or Jubilee, Central, District etc?
I do think they needed naming as there was no point in just saying then catch the overground south at places such as Willesden Junction which has more than one overground southbound train.
And eventually it’ll just be normal.

Well quite. Circle's good because it goes round and round so I remember that. Not sure whether it would work but the final stop on the route might be good, that's also shown on the departure boards. A bit routine but easier to find your way round. Or add it in brackets after the new name.

See, this is why it’s confusing. Circle goes round and round central London but Central goes through central London but to Epping one end in Essex!

Fair point, you'd need both end points in brackets which is getting a bit complicated, although it wouldn't need to be shown everywhere.

That’s the Circle line. :p The central line goes from East to West.

The names are a bit meh but I don’t mind the concept. I do mind they spent millions on it when they’re in deficit

You’ve then got Waterloo & City, which literally just goes between Waterloo and Bank (the city).
Bakerloo does Baker Street and Waterloo. But doesn’t explain anything else in the name.
So names are only important for connections. In which case call them whatever you want.
But names were probably needed other than just the overground for all those different lines.

Indeed, i.e. when you're travelling which is when they're important :) particularly if you have 2 minutes to catch a train and you don't know which one.
Exactly. And in the context of this running into Willesden Junction and being told overground south which could lead you to either Stratford or Barking.

It is needed, though - having it all be "the overground" is like having all of the Undergound be named the same, and saying "get the Undergound from here to here. Which Underground? This 'really long name' one." Some stations are on multiple Overground Lines and it is genuinely confusing.
