I was temped by the British Council teaching programme in North Korea which would have enabled me to waste my time doing both, and; as a bonus, get paid by the DPKR to chat to the locals, albeit elite locals. Upon my return I could have bemused Korean acquaintances by talking like someone from oop North
Had I applied, most of my colleagues would probably have been spies, wannabe spies or Juche-cuties. I've taught in Saudi Arabia, so am used to that level of weirdness and, at least, I could have got legally drunk.
The programme got wound up in 2017, so an opportunity lost.

It's clearly heading in a less democratic direction and I think Russia is a good comparison, the formal structures of democracy, like elections, will remain but they will have no real meaning. However it will take longer than 4 years for that to happen, and the problem for the right is who they stand in 4 years? Trump can't stand again and even if they think they can get away with changing things so he could his age is a factor as well. There is no guarantee his support can just be transferred over to someone else. I think the direction of travel is clear but it may not be a straight line.

I don't think the US is heading down the road to being a totalitarian dictatorship. It survived 4 years of Trump before and I think it will survive another couple (I really can't imagine him lasting till 2029) I would imagine life is going to get worse if you fall into one or more of the categories of poor, not white, non-Christian but I can't imagine life is too great anyway for such people.
The US may be a democracy but it's hardly a perfect society, despite a clear loon at the top making ever more bizarre decisions, I don't think the basic structure of it will change.
