Is America heading towards dictatorship?

Has any leader of a major state or EU come out critical of Trump's talk about economic and military power regarding Canada, Panama and Greenland ?
"German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said "the principle of the inviolability of borders applies to every country... no matter whether it's a very small one or a very powerful one".
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said "there is obviously no question that the European Union would let other nations of the world attack its sovereign borders".

Don’t be ridiculous; that’s standard fare for P&P and funny to boot. Did you TV people come on here with a game amongst yourselves to see who could be the most preposterous snowflake?
What are you talking about? What’s TV people? I’m not playing games, I’m trying to debate. So if someone defends themselves from abuse they’re a snowflake. That’s playground talk.

Greenland left the EU in 1985 after a referendum because they didn't like the Common Fisheries policy, so whilst it is part of the Danish Realm it presumably isn't within the sovereign borders of the EU.

I suppose the Right/Far Right push democracy to its absolute limits.

We had the Tories deny, lie and gaslight for 14 years. Nige is taking his opportunity not to respect the importance and influence of Parliamentary representation, but to further his own kingmaker (and money) ambitions. Tommy Manynames is currently banged up for being a moron, but he'll be back out and spreading his poison again soon enough. Badenoch appears to be indirectly exposing Tory incompetence and failure by pointing out all the UK's failings during her tenure as a Minister. And Social Media has rapidly become a cesspool owned by irresponsible and greedy individuals who seem to care nothing about its consequences.

Meanwhile, supporters of this descent into madness appear not to recognise lies, being manipulated and told exactly what they want to hear. I have yet to read nor hear anything from a MAGA voter that makes rational sense, a bit like Get Brexit Done, I suppose.

What can we do? Not much as the US don't take us very seriously. Trump may not be a dictator yet, but that certainly would appear to be the direction of travel, so perhaps his administration will test the boundaries whilst in office. They've certainly mastered the art of creating an alternative narrative and definitions of what constitutes good governance and it seems to appeal to his myopic fanbase.

But as big and powerful as America is, it doesn't exist in isolation (much as his supporters would like to claim it does); it does need collaboration and cooperation, to work with other countries. So threats of expansion and chest-beating feels all a bit performative in public for the fanbase, behind the scenes you would hope they'd exhibit a bit more rationality and political nous.

It's an interesting request, but I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "level of expertise?"

I mean, I don't know about you, but I'm not an expert in anything. Nor would I want to be as it might mean I think I know it all and would no longer need to keep learning.
Someone who is truly an expert in something recognises the limitations of their knowledge and is unlikely to fall victim to the conceits of the 'novice' end of the Dunning-Kruger effect (the idea they know-it-all and no longer need to keep learning)...

I don't think it will necessarily be clearcut whether it becomes a dictatorship or not. There will be lots of rump institutions that will be claimed to show it isn't a dictatorship. The Democrats will continue to pretend to provide opposition etc.

It's also only one of several dark possibilities. I think civil war has become increasingly likely, though more likely to start under a 'centrist' leadership than far right, so not in Trump's term.

I agree with this. In ancient Rome, long after it had become an empire, its leaders often invoked the republic and even claimed, at least nominally, that it still existed.
What you suggest here is similar and plausible.

Someone posted they want experts posting. They said they were old and waving their fist at the sky. I’m probably older than them and I don’t get angry and wave my fist at the sky. Interesting post btw.

There's this which I'm just finishing which goes into the reasons for Rome's decline and makes some comparisons with the US.

Novara interview with the authors here...

Back OT, I notice this Congress commentator managed to screenshot this glorification of Trump's Lebensraum before it was pulled.

Interesting to consider what's really going on with this mad shite; is this cover for a Putin Ukraine deal?
What do you think such a deal would be composed of to have this sort of cartoon chest beating as cover ?

It’s a good question and, really, who knows what Trump might think he’s achieving. I suppose, trying to rationalise the madness, maybe he thinks that normalising imperial ambitions might soften up domestic/world opinion for the inevitable concessions to Putin?
