Is America heading towards dictatorship?

I'm not lecturing. I'm expressing a personal preference, and providing some context for that preference.

Though it's interesting (to me, if not anyone else), you use the term 'lecturing' with it's negative connotation.
I don't think it was you that was being referred to there.

He’s kind of projecting that shit reactionary right-wing victimhood (‘it’s so unfair for well-off white men’) on to the whole nation state, that America is ‘treated unfairly’ and a victim despite their extreme wealth, power and control over the world. It’s a particular mindset, isn’t it?

Thats far too 6d chess IMO - this is nothing to do with Ukraine or Putin and everything to do with making america great again
normalising imperial ambitions is part of the wider normalising of far right opinion and action - this is their general mode
putin is respected because he is doing the same

Agree with this. He's legacy hunting. He didn't really achieve that much first time round and he wants to be a big name in history like Washington or Lincoln. I suspect this kind of thing will define his presidency, along with economic reforms, rather than culture war stuff. That was useful to get him where he is, and he'll no doubt throw a few bones in that direction, but this is going to be all about him and his place in history rather than whatever Heritage or the Christo-fascists want. He doesn't need them anymore and he won't need them again.

I wouldn't fall off my chair if it happened - the logistics of it, the correlation of forces, and to be frank the simple refusal to believe that it might happen so prevailant in European societies, mean that it would probably (in an irony) be rather like the Invasion of Denmark in 1940 - invasion by telegram.
Yeah. The population of Greenland is only about 56000 people. Less than live in coventry. So it wouldn't take them long.

There's this which I'm just finishing which goes into the reasons for Rome's decline and makes some comparisons with the US.

Novara interview with the authors here...

I watched the interview a little while ago, and the book is on my to-get list.

Yup, civ pop is spread out across vast distances, and while the Americans aren't wildly popular, it's probably fair to say that for the average Greenlander, life wouldn't change much to go from self-determination under Danish sovereignty, to self-determination under US sovereignty.

Moreover, on a purely practical track, there are barely no Danish forces in Greenland, and little way of getting them there in the face of US opposition/interference, and already US bases in situ.

Logistically, 24 hours from brakes off on a US runway to it all being over?

The planning will already exist - NATO and US doctrine from about 1950 onwards called for rapid US and Canadian reinforcement of Greenland to keep the Sovs away from the radars, the runways, and the SOSUS network.

Genuinely, they could do this on the second day of the Trump presidency without breaking a sweat.

This is why we need a European Army. It should have got off the ground after Russia invaded Ukraine. With US behaving like it appears to be under Trump maybe it is time to get it off the ground. If US annexes Greenland we have to at least kick US military bases out of Europe.

A quick google says about 20% own guns as hunting is commen but i doubt they have machine guns.

We might have left that a bit too late. If trump invaded another nato countries territory then putin might conclude that trump will just ignore the nato treaty completly.

True that.

This is pretty scary. Trump 2 is already shaping up to be looking like the worst case scenario.

War is peace.

I expect the army to unite Europe will be the Russian army. A strong European military force would need Russia to be at the centre of it

US going into Greenland will greenlight Chinese unification surely

I rarely agree with your posts but I too would be favour of expelling American military personnel and closing their bases

Nope, Europe needs to bring Russia back inside the tent - Europe united with Russia would form a strong alliance against malevolent US agression
What about malevolent Russian aggression?

It's too late to get Russia inside the tent, that ship sailed in the 90s if it was ever possible. Maybe in a post-Putin Russia.

I really wish I had a better understanding of China. I'm unsure of where the line is between western propaganda and actual reality of life there, in terms of human rights etc.

What does seem to be clear is that it's a functional, intelligent regime with long term plans. Which may at some point appear more appropriate to be aligned with than one that's batshit crazy and malevolent.
